Welcome to St. Aubyn’s School, a co-educational independent school for 525 children aged 3 to 13. Situated in beautiful surroundings of Woodford Green and Epping Forest and easily accessible from the main thoroughfares of London, St. Aubyn’s is set in eight acres of grounds. It is self-contained and well-resourced, offering small classes and high levels of teaching. The focus is on the education, welfare and personal development of each child. Strong relationships are at the core of this: relationships among pupils and between pupils and staff, all backed up by a partnership with parents.
EYFS (Nursery & Reception)
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) covers the Nursery and Reception years within the Pre Prep department; a warm and welcoming place where children are happy to play and learn. The children join us in the Nursery, which accommodates two classes of enquiring three-year-olds. The impressive Nursery building has wide, open-plan classes that include conservatories and bespoke furniture. This enables the children to have the best start to their academic journeys, which prepares them for their life at St. Aubyn’s beyond the Nursery years.
Pre Prep (Years 1 & 2)
In Pre Prep, they aim to develop a rounded educational experience for our children. They want to inspire an enjoyment of learning both inside and outside the classroom, through a broad and balanced curriculum. They consider that understanding is just as important as knowledge. Developing an understanding of perseverance and of the need for effort encourages children to become determined learners. They strive to provide a stimulating and challenging environment where individual needs are met and each child can take risks in their learning to develop resilience.
Middle School (Years 3 – 5)
In the Middle School we value each child as an individual; they encourage and foster independence, guiding pupils to develop to their full potential. They aim to create an environment where we believe each child has the chance to be successful, happy and valued for the person they are. It is a place where pupils and teachers enjoy and value learning, where lessons are exciting and tailored to pupils’ needs. They encourage children to be inquisitive learners and critical thinkers, to challenge themselves to really be the best they can.
Senior School (Years 6 – 8)
The Senior School can be characterised by three qualities that make it a unique and special preparatory experience. Alongside high academic achievement, they strive to make sure that every student develops a strong sense of independence and responsibility as well as full participation in school life. All students are actively encouraged to fully participate in the curricular and co-curricular life of the School. This can take the form of involvement in, amongst other things, residential trips, school councils, eco committee, clubs, Army Cadets, sports teams and the numerous performing arts events and groups.
Activities
The School offers a wide range of more than 40 weekly co-curricular activities before and after school, for children from Years 2 to 8. These activities are listed in the calendar each term. Most activities are voluntary and open to all, but some are by selection and invitation. Parental support for activities is much appreciated. Participating in, for instance, a choir, team or play, represents a real commitment.
Music
The Music Department is set in a purpose built Performing Arts Centre and comprises one main music classroom, one smaller room, three practice rooms, an office and a Performance Hall. There are three members of teaching staff who work on a full time and part time basis, together with 15 freelance instrumental teachers who visit the department at various times throughout the week.
Dance
Dance is included within the PE curriculum for Years 3, 4 and 5. The aim is to introduce pupils to a different form of exercise and fitness regime. The syllabus introduces pupils to elements of dance, including choreography which is theme based and pupil led. This culminates in a Year 5 production during the Lent term. There is also the opportunity for pupils throughout the School to take part in dance classes for other productions.
Drama
Performing in public is a thrilling experience and something which really helps children’s confidence grow. Drama is an important part of the all-round educational experience we provide and children are encouraged to take part in performances from an early age. This may be as part of a class assembly or as a character in one of the numerous productions which take place over the course of the year. These range from simple nativities in the Early Years Foundation Stage to musical productions in the Senior School.
Sport
The PE and Games department is a very busy and popular department with outstanding facilities. The indoor sports hall has badminton, basketball, football, netball and volleyball court markings. Outdoor facilities include a large field (for cricket, rounders, rugby, athletics and football), three all-weather pitches, a hardcourt area and two cricket nets.
