NURSERY
The journey begins at the age of three in our Foundation 1 nursery class. This is where we lay our first firm foundations in learning. It is in this class pupils prepare for later schooling and life skills that are fundamental in Prep school education. We offer the best possible start in a secure, safe, caring and happy environment, which provides enjoyment in exploration, expressing themselves through creativity and a thirst for discovering new knowledge.

RECEPTION
The Foundation 2 curriculum continues to follow the EYFS Statutory Framework building on the knowledge learnt in Foundation 1, but also introduces more formalised learning to ensure our pupils are ready for Year 1. Although our pupils still have some opportunities for child-initiated learning, they also follow a more structured timetable based on lessons that cover all the seven areas of the EYFS Curriculum.

YEAR 1
The move from Foundation 2 (Reception) to Year 1 is carefully managed by the teams working together to ensure a smooth transition takes place. We provide a happy, well-resourced and structured environment where the pupils are valued as individuals and supported in developing their learning style to continue their journey in becoming independent and successful learners.

YEAR 2
The Year 1 and Year 2 teams work closely together to ensure pupils are ready for their final stage in Key Stage One. In Year 2, pupils continue to build on the skills they have developed in Year 1, flourishing as independent and successful learners. They continue to thrive and achieve to the best of their ability, not just academically.  A range of talents are encouraged and celebrated and we maintain our high expectations for behaviour and development of social skills.

PREP
In Year 3 pupils join the Prep Department of Avon House Preparatory School ready to begin the next stage of their exciting educational journey through Key Stage Two.Encouraged and supported every step of the way, Prep pupils quickly develop the ability to be reflective and adaptable.  We offer them a broad and dynamic curriculum, coupled with high quality, motivational teaching, in a nurturing and caring family environment.  Our School has a well-deserved reputation for excellent pastoral care and we value highly the success and wellbeing of each and every pupil.

Things to note

CLUBS
Avon House Preparatory School offers a wide range of extra-curricular activities. These take place before and after school as well as during the lunch break. Clubs change termly and places are allocated at the start of each term. The majority of clubs are run by our staff and are free of charge, except where consumables are used. Karate is run independently and charged accordingly. The co-curricular provision in the Prep Department aims to provide pupils with the opportunity to gain life skills or try something new.

EDUCATIONAL VISITS
Class and school day visits are a key element of school life.  They support the curriculum and activities carried out in class to add depth and broaden pupil’s understanding. These visits to places of interest are an excellent way of generating fresh enthusiasm for key topics and take place on a regular basis to a variety of exciting and stimulating destinations, adding to the enjoyment of education.  Visitors from charities, theatre groups, and guest speakers also extend our pupils’ experiences.  At times, the whole School may be involved in collective initiatives, as was the case in a recent visit to Legoland.

RESIDENTIAL VISITS
As the pupils go through these formative years, residential weeks also form a vital part of their growing independence and resilience to cope with being away from home.Currently our Year 2, 3 and 4 pupils travel to the Isle of Wight for a week packed with exciting events including travelling on a ferry, beach exploration, a steam train journey and fossil hunting.
