The Gower School is Independent Primary school in Islington for kids aged 0 to 11 (Gender - Mixed )
They offer a broad curriculum in multi-age classrooms which aims to develop the whole person – their mind, body, heart and soul. They teach academic, social and other valuable skills to last a lifetime. Our goal is to make sure that our girls and boys are confident, happy all-rounders with a love of learning.They are guided not by bureaucratic edict but by the Montessori philosophy of education that espouses respect for the individual child, nurturing their surroundings and self-reliance. We also believe in purposeful and fulfilling activities that break down the artificial division of ‘work’ and ‘play’. Our experience is that reinforcing the inner drive for self-improvement is more effective in academic attainment and developing the whole child, than promoting peer-competitiveness.
Facilities
Nursery
The Gower School Nursery operates at our North Road, Islington sites and welcomes children from the age of three months up to five years old. Parents can choose from a range of attendance options at our nursery, depending on what works best for you and your child. Your child can attend between two and five days a week either in the mornings or afternoons or all day.Children will enjoy free play, practical and outdoor activities, music and sports and all our nursery classes have an excellent pupil: teacher ratio. There is also a named Key Person for every child. The Key Person looks after your child every day, building a special relationship with them and getting to know them and their preferences, as well as providing a vital link with the home and parents.
Lower School
In the Lower School, they have two classes for children aged five to seven years (parallel mixed Form One and Two groups): Les Étoiles de Mer (Starfish) and Les Baleines (Whales). Each group have around 20 students.The teachers in Les Étoiles de Mer are Miss Kiernan (Head of Group), Mrs Morton (Montessori Teacher) and Miss Carhart (Primary Teacher). In Les Baleines are Miss Waghorn (Head of Group) and Miss Peternell (Montessori Teacher). All groups work with Mrs Shah (Montessori Teacher) who particularly helps children with Life Skills work, and Miss Tang who is a Teaching Assistant for Lower School.
Upper School
The Upper School covers pupils from Forms Three to Six. The children are grouped into Les Aigles Impériaux (Form Three), Les Aigles Royaux (Form Four), Les Élans (Form Five), Les Rennes (Form Five) and Les Flamants (Form Six).In these classes, the holistic Montessori ethos is still the central guide. Autonomous research work is encouraged and supported by numerous trips and visits off-site. However, as the children move into studying more abstract concepts, the need for Montessori equipment becomes less pronounced and a shift takes place towards a more traditional timetable with weekly spelling, times tables and verbal/non-verbal reasoning.
