They are one of the UK's top grammar schools. As a state school, education is free for all pupils. They are a successful state boarding school, rated as 'outstanding' for boarding by Ofsted. Boarding at Lancaster Royal Grammar School costs only about a third of the fees payable at independent schools. For these reasons, we believe we are an outstanding alternative to the independent sector. There are 1200 pupils at the school, including 170 boarders and a thriving Sixth Form of 350 students. We challenge the brightest pupils in the North West of England, along with boarders from further afield, to fulfil their potential.
Year 7, 8 & 9 Storey House
Storey House is the junior boarding house of LRGS and is home to around 35 Year 7, 8 and 9 pupils. Our aim is to provide a warm and supportive atmosphere for the pupils during their earliest time in the school. To help them settle in, we provide a clear and easy to follow routine. They also have plenty of free time when they can choose what activities to take part in. They aim to ensure that the boys enjoy living as part of a community and we all work together to make this a pleasant and positive place to live. We have a number of experienced duty masters and matrons who offer help and guidance.
Year 10, 11
The general ethos of Ashton is for pupils to be given as many opportunities to achieve to their academic potential, whilst also experiencing as many other facets of school life as possible. Whilst an element of routine and structure is a necessity in community living Ashton House retains a relaxed and happy atmosphere. Ashton House has around 50 boarders at any time, aged between 14 and 18. Situated on the Bay View site, it consists of two buildings; Ashton House and Ashton Annexe with the latter housing some of the Sixth Form boarders. Both buildings have a range of bedrooms, amenities, recreation rooms with pool tables, TVs and pianos and a kitchen for the use of the boys. Whichever building boys are in they are fully involved in the House community.
Sixth Form
Many of our students have been with us since Year 7, but every year we welcome about 80 new students, some as boarders, from schools in Lancashire, Cumbria and further afield, directly into the Sixth Form. See our Admissions page for further details of how to join. As a state boarding school, education is free for all students and we also offer affordable weekly boarding for boys and girls at highly competitive rates.
Extra Curricular Activities, Clubs and Societies
Lancaster Royal Grammar Schools offers a wealth of clubs and societies' activities, which take place after school or at lunchtimes and, in some cases, at weekends and during holidays. Many of these activities are supported by the Annual Fund, which aims to support the widest possible range of extra-curricular activity to all boys in the school.
Sport
Lancaster Royal Grammar School is justifiably proud of its sporting tradition. The School’s reputation for producing competitive teams and individuals across a range of abilities is second to none. We are rightly proud of the steady stream of Old Lancastrians who continue to garner success at national and international level.
