Description

Hall Grove School is Independent Secondary school in Not applicable for kids aged 3 to 13 (Gender - 3 to 13 )

Hall Grove is a family-owned school with a family ethos at its heart.  The school values are the foundation of everything we do.  This means that we strive to ensure Hall Grove children are: kind, respectful of others, hard-working, honest and polite. They encourage children to ‘have a go’ and challenge themselves, and explore the full curriculum to find out the things they love in life, and what they can achieve. They have exceptional staff to reassure those who find some areas more difficult, whilst ensuring those who need to be stretched have the chance to climb higher. They want to maximise the potential of every child. Hall Grove has a very special character. It is a country school that enriches young lives with a wide range of experiences, both in its extensive grounds and on the South Devon coast at our own field study centre. Success can be measured in our academic results, sporting achievements and by the dramatic and musical performances. More importantly, the pupils enjoy their school days and, over time, they develop a deep and lasting attachment to the place that will have helped shape their future lives.

Facilities

Early Years
The purpose-built setting, the Barn, ensures the children in Early Years are given all the care, guidance and encouragement needed to develop as individuals whilst following their own interests at their own pace.During their time spent in Pre-School and Reception, your child will follow the Early Years Foundation Stage framework, achieving the Early Years Learning Goals by the end of Reception. Their learning is enriched with educational visits, themed days and visitors to the school. They also have weekly specialist sessions in Dance, PE, Music and French. The curriculum is highly practical, making use of both the indoor and outdoor classrooms and an outdoor area.We have one class in Pre-School led by a qualified teacher, Helen Solomon. Reception is made up of two classes both led by qualified teachers. All Early Years Teachers are supported by teaching assistants.

Pre Prep
Throughout the Pre-Prep (Years 1 & 2), the emphasis is placed on ensuring the happiness and well-being of every pupil and nurturing their individual talents. With excellent adult to child ratios, we can ensure each child receives the best possible support and encouragement. We work hard to create a stimulating and engaging environment where children can thrive, develop and learn at the right pace for them. In the Pre-Prep setting, we offer a broad and balanced curriculum, alongside high academic standards, whilst developing confidence, emotional resilience and intellectual curiosity. Pre-Prep use a topic-based approach and plan activities by observing each individual child, which helps us to provide purposeful learning. The children have weekly specialist lessons in Dance and Drama, French, Music and PE to extend our cross-curricular approach to all areas of learning. We enrich the classroom experience with educational visits, themed days and visitors to the school. We also make full use of the Food Technology cabin and the various outdoor classrooms.

Lower Juniors
Children join Years 3 and 4 at the age of 7. Our aim is to provide a nurturing environment so that every child feels happy and safe, enabling them to flourish academically. A number of new children join us at this stage. We know that, initially, moving from Pre-Prep or a Primary School to Lower Juniors can feel like a big step for the children. Pupils are carefully guided during this transition, from helping them navigate our extensive grounds, to encouraging them to rise to the new expectations of Key Stage 2.We build on the children’s foundation skills and concepts from Key Stage 1, whilst introducing new subjects and skill sets through subjects like DT, Art and the Humanities. There is specialist teaching for French, Music and Games. We have termly trips outside the school to help enrich classwork.

Upper Juniors
In Years 5 and 6 (age 9-11) our pupils experience a rich and varied curriculum. Year 5 are streamed by ability for Maths and from Year 6 streaming is extended to include languages. Children are taught by subject specialists in many subject areas, making full use of our Science labs for practical sessions where the focus is on guided discovery to stimulate a genuine curiosity in their learning. Many of our children will sit pre-tests for senior schools whilst they are in Year 6; we carefully tailor our learning tasks to give them the skills in the core subjects of Maths, English and Science required for success. This includes current affairs and a PSHE programme which is pivotal for their cross-curricular learning. Drama and performance give added confidence for senior school transfer interviews and presentations. This broad and balanced curriculum informs the child's view of the world and assists with challenges outside the classroom.

Seniors
Years 7 and 8 children are senior pupils (age 11-13) at Hall Grove and with this title comes a number of exciting opportunities and responsibilities across all areas of school life.Academically, the children move onto the broad and rich 13+ curriculum. Pupils are taught by a host of new teachers and subject specialists. The curriculum widens to include lessons in Greek and Computing. The sciences split into Chemistry, Physics and Biology classes across three dedicated classrooms. There are increased opportunities in the performing and visual arts as they seek to give the children a range of experiences and inspire them to try new things.

Features

Things to note

Music
Music lessons are taught by our specialist teachers to all year groups from Pre-School upwards. Pupils are encouraged to participate in both group and individual practical activities and are given opportunities for achieving high standards of music making. They want children to enjoy music in their own individual way, whether that be through listening, playing, performing or composing.

Dance
The resident dance teacher is now offering dance teaching to all pupils, from Pre-School through to Year 8, in timetabled weekly lessons. The lessons provide an opportunity for children to develop their creative and performance skills, dancing ability, and self-confidence. Children develop these skills through learning and having a go at a variety of dance styles. Plans are also in place for our very own ‘Hall Grove Dance Academy’, which will offer graded examinations in ballet, tap and modern for all ages. Dance performances held throughout the year allow students to showcase their work, whilst having fun with their friends and creating memories they will never forget.

Drama
Drama is a busy and vibrant part of our Performing Arts teaching.  From Year One upwards, Drama is an integral part of the school curriculum, taught by a specialist teacher.  Pupils have dedicated, timetabled lessons and work towards a range of productions throughout the School year.  Pupils are taught Drama techniques as well as having opportunities to engage their creativity in lessons.  Working together in groups enhances their social development and ability to work as a team.

Sport
The school firmly believes that a 'sport for all' philosophy together with a strong pursuit of excellence can operate with great success alongside each other at all levels. All children in Years 3-8 get the opportunity to play in competitive matches, either through fixtures against other schools or through the house competition system.
