St Mary's School Ascot is a Roman Catholic independent day and boarding school for girls aged 11 to 18 in England. The school is a forty minute journey from London, and are set in 55 acres of beautiful grounds in the heart of Berkshire. 

Facilities

  • There is an athletics track, two floodlit AstroTurf pitches (which become 21 extra tennis courts in the Summer), five further floodlit hard courts for netball and tennis, a grass football pitch and a 25m indoor swimming pool.
  • There is a state of the art indoor sports complex called the Orchard Centre, which has four badminton courts, indoor basketball and netball, a fitness suite, two squash courts and two dance studios.

Extra Curricular

  • Sport is an exciting and central part of every girl's day at school. All year groups have fixtures throughout the year in our major sports of hockey, netball, tennis and athletics, as well as many other sports, including cricket, swimming and squash. There are regular House competitions in most sports.
  • Music has a prominent role at St Mary's.There are regular concerts involving the orchestra, various choirs, the jazz band, and other ensembles and soloists, and the choirs also take a leading role in worship at Mass on Sundays. 
  • There are plenty of opportunities for girls to perform on stage at St Mary’s. Productions that take place all year round, and involve girls from all year groups. 
  • Once the last academic lesson ends, at 4:30, the girls spread off around campus, to sports practices, music or drama rehearsals, club and society meetings, dance practices, talks, House teas, trips, events with other schools, house competitions, or one of the many other activities that are available. Admission Details

The school accepts about 65 pupils each year. Entry is at 11+ (our main intake), 13+ or 16+ and is by the school’s own entrance examination, an interview and a report from the current school. About 40 pupils are admitted to Year 7 (11+), 20 to Year 9 (13+) and about 5 to the Sixth Form (16+).

If you wish to apply for entry to St Mary’s Ascot, we suggest that you register your daughter at least two years prior to the year of entry. This will place your daughter on the candidate list to sit our entrance examination. Entrance Exams

The examinations and interviews for all 11+, 13+ and 16+ take place at St Mary’s in November / December. The school does not issue past papers but will supply guidelines to the current school or parents upon request. 

The subjects tested are:

at 11+: English, Mathematics and a general paper (which could include: graded spelling; non-verbal puzzles; listening skills)
at 13+: English, Mathematics, Science, Religious Studies, History or Geography, French or an alternative modern language (Spanish, Italian or German) and Latin
at 16+: a general paper, and interviews in the subjects to be studied at A Level

  • Registration Fee: £300
  • Acceptance Fee: £2000
  • Boarding Fee: £16,710 per term
  • Day Boarding Fee: £11,900 per term

Scholarships

  • Academic Scholarships: All candidates sitting assessment for entry at 11+, 13+ and 16+ will automatically be considered for the general academic scholarships. At 11+ there are three academic scholarships available. The value of each scholarship is 5% of the fees. Candidates sit papers in English and Mathematics and also complete a general paper. At 13+ there are three academic scholarships available. The value of each scholarship is 5% of the fees. Candidates sit papers in English, Mathematics, Science, Religious Studies, a modern language (French, Spanish, Italian or German), Latin, and choose from either History or Geography. At 16+ there is one academic scholarship available. The value of the scholarship is 5% of the fees. Candidates sit an essay paper, meet Department Heads of those subjects they wish to study at A Level, and are also interviewed by the Head of Sixth Form. Scholarships are tenable throughout the scholar’s time at St Mary’s, subject to certain conditions.

  • All Rounder Scholarship: At 11+ and 13+ one all-rounder scholarship is awarded at each age group to a candidate who is likely to contribute exceptionally well to the overall life of the school. The value of each scholarship is 5% of the fees. It takes into account ability in two areas of activity outside of the classroom (art, drama, music or sport) as well as academic potential. Recipients will be selected from the entrance assessments, and the current Head teacher’s reference will be given careful consideration. The scholarship is tenable throughout the scholar’s time at St Mary’s, subject to certain conditions.

  • Art Scholarship: Application forms are available from the Registrar and will be required to be completed and submitted by Friday 3 November 2023. Candidates should submit a portfolio of between 10 and 12 pieces of work, not exceeding A1 size, covering a range of different processes and techniques. Ceramics and other 3D work will only be accepted for consideration in photographic form. The portfolio must show evidence of work produced at home as well as at school. Each piece should be clearly labelled with the candidate’s name, age and the date when it was undertaken. All the work should be presented in a folder. Art scholars are selected on the basis of an excellent portfolio, an art examination and an interview. A written statement should be received by the school from the candidate’s current art teacher. Candidates will be required to submit their portfolios, clearly named, together with a written statement from their current art teacher, by 9:30am on Friday 10 November. Successful candidates will be invited by the Head of Art to sit an examination in either drawing or painting on Friday 17 November. Pupils holding an art scholarship are expected to make a strong contribution to the artistic life of the school. They are expected to follow the Art and Design course leading to GCSE.

  • Music Scholarship: Application forms are available from the Registrar and should be submitted by Friday 3 November 2023. Please note that the applicant’s current Head teacher must sign the form and that a detailed report from the candidate’s first study instrument teacher must be enclosed with the application form. Parents are asked to send copies of all music, including relevant accompaniments, one week prior to the audition. Candidates who are selected from their application by the Director of Music will be called for an interview and audition on Thursday 16 November 2023 and should expect to be at the school for approximately one hour. Pupils holding a music scholarship are expected to make a strong contribution to the musical life of the school. They are expected to follow the Music course leading to GCSE.

  • Sports Scholarship: Application forms are available from the Registrar, and should be submitted (together with a current passport-sized photograph) by Friday 27 October 2023. Please note that the candidate’s present Head teacher and Head of PE will be asked for a detailed reference. The candidate is required to submit a record of her sporting achievements and any positions of leadership held. In addition, any reference submitted by an external coach is beneficial but not compulsory. Candidates selected by the Head of PE from their application will be called for an interview and assessment at St Mary’s on Thursday 16 November 2023. They should expect to take a series of practical tests, some relevant to all sports, some specific to the two sports they have nominated, and be interviewed by members of St Mary’s PE department. Pupils holding a sport scholarship are expected to make a strong contribution to the sporting life of the school.

Achievements

At A Level, 62% of pupils achieved A*-A grades, and 92% achieved A*-B. At I/GCSE, 87% of pupils achieved grades 9-7. 

These results have helped our pupils to gain places at a range of excellent universities around the world. 95% of those starting undergraduate courses in the UK in 2023 are at Russell Group universities or St Andrews, including Oxford and Cambridge. Places have been secured at prestigious universities in the USA, including Harvard and Pennsylvania. One of our medics achieved her four-A* offer to read medicine at the University of Hong Kong. Two pupils secured places on the highly competitive Trinity College Dublin and Columbia Dual BA programme. 87% of all applicants achieved places at either their first choice or their insurance university.
