To get a real sense of what Sunningdale is like, a visit is a must so do get in touch and book in a time to come and see what makes Sunningdale so special. Sunningdale School is a family run boys’ prep school of 110 pupils in Berkshire. Founded in 1874 it stands in 25 acres of mature gardens and grounds. The school is excellently situated just 45 minutes from London, 20 minutes from Heathrow and 15 minutes from the M3, M4 and M25 Motorways.Sunningdale’s aim is to provide a happy and supportive environment in which boys can prosper both as individuals and as members of the school community. They also aim to prepare boys both academically and socially for life at public school. The record at Common Entrance is outstanding and boys from Sunningdale regularly gain scholarships to top public schools.

Facilities

Academic Life
They set high academic standards and expect all the boys to do their best and to be ambitious. One of the most important things they do is to build academic confidence. They encourage the boys to take risks in the classroom, to give an answer even if they are not certain it is the right answer. It is so important that the boys take an active part in the lessons as they will enjoy them and learn a great deal more. They structure the forms in a unique way, operating a form of ladder system. Boys move through our form system as they develop academically and not simply because of their age. This means that boys for whom learning is easier are stretched and challenged and boys who find it a little more difficult are given the time and support to develop at their own pace.In their last two years, the boys sit a full set of Common Entrance or Scholarship papers in their internal examinations so that by the time they sit the real thing, they know exactly what to expect.

Features

Things to note

Art
Each form has two lessons of art a week, as well as the opportunity to attend art clubs in the evenings. The art department has an extensive art library which the children refer to regularly for inspiration on projects, as well as three pottery wheels and a kiln. Each boy has his own sketch book in which to record ideas, plan projects or to practice techniques. All boys who show an interest and talent for the subject are encouraged to sit for art scholarships.

Music
Most boys at Sunningdale play at least one instrument and many do more. Some of the boys reach a very high level and can be prepared for scholarships to their senior schools. Others play for pure enjoyment which is also strongly encouraged.Singing is an important part of Sunningdale life. They have Chapel four mornings per week and a slightly longer service on Sunday evening. There are two choirs, the Chapel Choir and the Junior Choir. A new anthem is performed in Chapel every Sunday and they all perform at concerts and out of school. Remembrance Sunday and the Carol Services are very special events and extremely well attended by parents and friends.

Public Speaking and Drama
Every boy at Sunningdale gets the opportunity to perform. Being on stage in front of friends and family is so good for building confidence and boys relish the opportunity. There are various different productions throughout the year. In November each year we have a French Drama Evening with every boy singing or speaking in French, each Lent term every boy has a part in the whole school musical, there is a Nativity for the younger forms. In recent years they have put on productions of The Lion King, Annie and Robin Hood.

Sport
All boys at Sunningdale have the opportunity to play a wide variety of games. The major sports are Football in the Michaelmas Term, Rugby in the Lent Term and Cricket in the Summer Term. The advantage of being in a small school is that almost all the boys get to represent the school at some level. This sense of inclusion is invaluable in building confidence, self esteem and team spirit. In addition to the three major sports, boys also play tennis, squash, Eton fives, golf, table tennis, athletics and cross country against other schools. Fives has been played at Sunningdale since at least 1892 and we have achieved great success in the Prep Schools Eton Fives Tournament over the years.
