Eton College

Description

Eton College is a full boarding school for boys for boys aged between 13 and 18 with 1,344 pupils, situated next to the historic town of Windsor, Berkshire.

The school was founded to offer transformative educational opportunities to boys with limited life chances, and they have held to this offer ever since. Currently they have over 100 boys in the school who pay no fees at all.

Facilities

  • There are around 20 theatrical productions staged in a typical year, ranging from full scale musicals and Jacobean classics in the largest venue, to productions of the latest contemporary works directed and produced by the boys themselves.
  • Housing 29 laboratories for the biology, chemistry and physics departments, this Victorian building has been substantially extended and refurbished multiple times over the last half-century.

Extra Curricular

Art: The Drawing Schools provide a stimulating and safe environment for all boys who wish to pursue art, whether they are studying it as a subject or not. Boys freely explore the visual arts, with access to a wide range of traditional and contemporary techniques guided by teachers.

Drama: We aim to facilitate the learning experience of boys in all aspects of current theatre arts – encouraging them to discover who they are, and who they could be, as artists and practitioners. There are around 20 theatrical productions staged in a typical year, ranging from full scale musicals and Jacobean classics in the largest venue, to productions of the latest contemporary works directed and produced by the boys themselves.

Music: There are currently 53 instrumental ensembles which rehearse each week. There are seven choirs and choral groups at Eton ranging from a 200-strong chorus to small close harmony groups. Eton’s singers enjoy a wide range of solo singing opportunities as well as musical theatre productions and workshops. In addition to the opportunities provided by the department, senior boys regularly put on their own concerts, a tradition initiated by Hubert Parry.

Sport: The College offers a great deal of coached sports with many boys using this pathway to play for school teams. School teams include, but are not limited to, approximately 45 school rugby and football teams in the Michaelmas Half (term), 18 hockey teams in the Lent, 22 cricket teams, 10 rowing crews and over 40 pairs in tennis, as well as school teams in many other sports ranging from basketball to fencing to sailing and climbing.

Combined Cadet Force: Outdoor activities impel boys into challenging and unfamiliar situations that create opportunities to learn new skills and develop personal awareness. All CCF cadets have the opportunity to take part in Adventurous Training throughout their time in the CCF. Senior cadets have participated in a range of activities including sailing, horse riding, rock climbing, mountain biking and kayaking.

Environmental Education: Providing boys with the knowledge and skills required to lead environmental initiatives in a world with sustainability at its heart. Environmental Education at Eton prepares boys for a workplace that increasingly requires skills and understanding in sustainability in a fun and rewarding way. Students who meet several times a week, are encouraged to pursue their own environment-related interests, lead projects, lobby for change, or work outdoors to enhance biodiversity.

Outdoor Education: Outdoor education impels boys into challenging and unfamiliar situations that facilitate learning and growth. For a long time, outdoor activities have been recognised as a source of enjoyment, a training ground for useful skills, a means of engaging with nature and the environment, and a way of providing both a physical and mental challenge. More recently, the educational world has embraced outdoor activities as a platform and facilitator for developing personal awareness and a knowledge of group dynamics and their effective management.

Admission Details

Everyone at Eton works hard to create an exciting, stimulating and caring environment, to enable each boy to reach his full potential. All our boys are also expected to make their own contribution to school life.

To achieve this we have developed an admissions process which looks at a boy’s current and potential academic ability as well as whether he will be happy in our boarding environment. Every year we typically welcome boys from about 120 different state and independent schools.

A boy may be registered up until 30 June of the school year he turns 10 (UK school Year 5). After this the only route of entry will be through scholarships or Sixth Form entry, which open in Year 8 (for Year 9 entry) and Year 11 (for Sixth Form entry).

Eton is committed to supporting boys with disabilities and also has a Learning Support Centre for boys with special educational needs and disabilities. Click on the links below for more information:

With over 15% of leavers applying to the US, supporting prospective US applicants is the joint responsibility of the Master-in-Charge and the US Universities Adviser. The US Universities Adviser also offers preparation classes for US standardised tests (SAT or ACT), for which an additional fee is placed on the school bill. Eton enjoys private test centre status for the SAT, allowing boys to sit tests on site. Eton also benefits from having an Annenberg Fellow, an annual post filled by a recent graduate of a top US institution. The US universities team not only advises the boys about their applications, including the essays that form part of the application, but also supports their House Masters and teaching Masters in preparing their references. Boys are encouraged to engage with the US universities team from D Block (Year 11) onwards through a series of lectures, visits by admissions tutors, and targeted advice at critical points in their Eton career. A small number of Etonians go on to universities in the rest of the world, which have included Trinity College, Dublin, Canadian universities, Bocconi university in Milan, and the University of Hong Kong.
