Description

Bacup and Rawtenstall Grammar School is leading State Secondary school in Rossendale. This is a Selective school for kids age 11 to 18 years. Gender - Mixed

The students are full of ambition and our staff challenge and support them in achieving their aspirations. Although we are a selective school, our students come from a wide range of backgrounds. We pride ourselves on our traditional values and strong “family” ethos and offer a safe, secure environment where students can flourish and excel. They can trace the history back to Newchurch Grammar School founded in 1703. The core of their staff formed BRGS on our current site in 1913.  With 100 years of serving families in Rossendale and beyond, we are proud of our heritage and celebrate our school traditions, but alongside this, we seek to embrace positive change and innovation.

This advice ensures that the mix of courses taken by each student is balanced, leaving open maximum options for the Sixth Form and future career choice. The GCSE examinations are completed at the end of Year 11 and include a core of: English Language, English Literature, mathematics, biology, chemistry, physics (as 3 separate GCSEs) and religious education. One humanity subject, chosen from geography and history. One modern foreign language (MFL), chosen from French, German or Spanish.

Key Stage 5
As a large Sixth Form, we design our curriculum around student choice and are able to offer most subjects in combination with each other.  Our study programme meets the Department for Education's requirements for 16-19.  In addition to all of our students taking at least 3 A levels, we also have a tutor programme and timetabled private study.  Year 12 students choose 4 subjects for the first term to broaden choice and ensure they are on the right programme of study.  Year 12 students also follow an enrichment programme for 2 hours on most Wednesday afternoons.  Most students are full time students with over 540 timetabled hours over the course of the year and all students should have passed GCSE English Language and Maths to at least grade 4 upon entry into the Sixth Form.
