Facilities

Nursery
In the Nursery, they pride ourselves on being a loving, caring and calm environment where children are celebrated as individuals. Children explore all aspects of practical life and sensory learning and are introduced to the fundaments of language and numeracy through play and exploration. The Nursery is a small home-from-home setting where children are safe and given a strong sense of security. The rooms are set out to encourage self-reliance with equipment easily accessible to the children on low shelves. The garden area gives the Nursery their own outside space and is used extensively for time to explore the natural world, for gardening and to play.

Early Years
At Whitehall, we believe that children learn best through play and when children are able to follow their own ideas. Children are supported by adults who enable their learning by respecting, understanding and allowing children to empower themselves within their environment.  We celebrate a child’s uniqueness and encourage respect and social interaction. The Early Years classes are Nursery aged 6 months to 3 years, Foundation aged 3 – 4 years and Reception aged 4 – 5 years. The Foundation group is located in the ground floor of the Coach House with direct access to the Hall for indoor play and access to their own garden/outside classroom for Woodland Working, music, art, sand and water play.

Infants
Children learn through experience by taking part in carefully planned activities which are fun and practical. They establish a secure foundation in literacy and numeracy skills to become confident, independent learners. The Infant curriculum places a strong emphasis on English and Mathematics. In English lessons the children cover essential comprehension, grammar and phonic skills within a variety of activities that also draw upon their creative and imaginative natures. Each week, the children read individually to their class teacher as well as enjoying reading with their peers in a guided group. Handwriting and spellings are an additional aspect of the curriculum that are taught throughout the school.

Juniors
Juniors at Whitehall School are encouraged to become independent individuals whose problem-solving skills and academic abilities are progressed through a stimulating and extended curriculum.A wide variety of teaching methods promote high academic standards as well as the enjoyment of learning. Our aim is to develop confident learners who take a proactive approach to their own education and feel secure enough within the classroom environment to take risks in order to further their knowledge and understanding.

Things to note

Sports
Physical Education and Sports play a large part in the lives of the children at Whitehall School. Three sessions per week include one indoor PE session and two outdoor sessions. We currently offer Gymnastics, Dance, Hockey, Netball, Football, Rugby, Tennis and Swimming and focus our team games on practice for inter-school matches and ISI Regional competitions.  We use our own sports field and the local provision of hard courts and fields for games practice and for Cross country we use the surrounding countryside for safe running in preparation for competition. Our whole school Sports Day is a fun and exciting event for parents to watch their children take part it track and field events.

Swimming
In the Summer Term and through the Summer Camp, the heated, covered swimming pool is in use. Each week of the Summer Term, children receive School Swimming lessons with ASA Instructors which culminates in a Junior Swimming Gala at the end of the year. During Summer Camp, the swimming pool is used for fun swim sessions with Lifeguards.
