Pre-Prep
Pre-Prep is the start of The Beacon journey for boys aged 3-7. During these precious years, they ensure every boy feels secure and valued, so they are inspired to achieve their full potential.From its earliest stages in Nursery, our curriculum aims to foster a life-long love of learning and curiosity in the boys. They enjoy a rich and varied curriculum, which will prepare today’s boys for tomorrow’s world. Boys from Reception onwards are taught by a Class Teacher with a full-time assistant. Specialist taught subjects such as Music, Games, PE, Drama, ICT and International Studies are spread throughout the week and complement the core learning.Music and Drama play an integral role in Pre-Prep and all boys perform in annual productions. A variety of after-school clubs are available to boys from the Summer Term in Reception upwards. These include chess, singing, Art, Spanish and storytelling. There is also a range of fun and educational school trips.
Prep School
From the age of seven, boys enter our Prep School, which comprises Lower School (Years 3 and 4), Middle School (Years 5 and 6) and Upper School (Years 7 and 8). This is an important developmental stage for the Beacon boys, as they learn greater independence and enjoy further specialist teaching. They mature and grow throughout each of these three distinct stages. The popular House system is also introduced in the Prep School, with boys joining one of four Houses and enjoying a wide variety of cross-age group activities and competitions. This system provides a focus for boys’ energies on the sports field, in the classroom and in other areas of School life. Regular House and sectional assemblies take place, enabling success to be celebrated and team spirit fostered.As the boys progress through our Prep School, they also enjoy taking part in a wide range of competitive sports fixtures, experience an exciting variety of cross-curricular residential trips and take on further responsibilities within the School.
Beyond the Classroom
At The Beacon, our boys’ learning and lives outside the classroom are just as important as their academic progress. Our well-established introductory meetings, moving-up mornings and mentoring programme help new boys quickly settle into The Beacon. The flourishing School Councils and Self & Society (PSHEE) lessons give boys the opportunity to discuss any issues that might arise throughout the year. They have a dedicated School Counsellor and Medical Centre, which provide invaluable support to our community. The whole-school mindfulness programme, starting in Reception with weekly mindful yoga sessions, equips the boys with essential skills to manage the ever-increasing pace of life, as they grow and develop.
Performing Arts
Music and Drama are an integral and valued part of School life at The Beacon from Reception upwards, and these areas continue to grow in strength every year. Outdoor Learning
Over the past few years, Outdoor Learning at The Beacon has flourished, with boys from Reception to Year 8 enjoying interactive learning outdoors. Where better to learn new things while appreciating the beauty of nature
School Trips
School trips are an important part of life at The Beacon, and the boys experience a varied range of fun and educational outings from Reception upwards. School trips reflect and complement many aspects of the curriculum, and all term-time trips are included in the fees.Boys in Year 4 and above enjoy an annual residential trip. This year, the Year 4 boys are looking forward to a two-night trip to Shortenills Environmental Education Centre in the Chilterns, Year 5 will take part in a three-night trip to Windmill Hill in Sussex, Year 6 enjoy a week-long multi-activity trip to Newquay and Year 7 go on a team-building trip within the first two weeks of joining Upper School, where their leadership, problem solving and communication skills are put to the test in a multi-activity 2-night stay under canvas.

Little Beacons Nursery and Reception Place:
A year prior to entry in the Autumn term, they invite prospective Nursery and Reception boys to an informal play session with our Head of Early Years to ensure he is ready to start at The Beacon the following September. Offers are then sent in registration date order.
Years 1 and 2 Place:
Boys are invited to a Taster Day in the term prior to starting to enable your son to experience life as a Beacon boy. During the day he will enjoy a variety of lessons, lunch and have the opportunity to meet his teachers and boys. During the day boys will be assessed using a verbal and non-verbal standardised test, and offer letters will be sent out a few days after a successful Taster Day.
Prep School Place (Years 3 to 8):
In the October prior to entry, they invite registered boys to our Taster Day. They enjoy a fun, interactive day enjoying lessons, Games and Drama while being assessed through observations. The boys complete a verbal and non-verbal assessments (in Years 4-8 these assessments are online) and for older boys in Years 7 and 8 an informal interview. In addition, we ask for a school reference or current school report.

The Governors of The Beacon are committed to broadening access to the School by offering to eligible parents/guardians means-tested financial support with the payment of School fees.
