Swanbourne House School is Independent Secondary school in Not applicable for kids aged 2 to 13 (Gender - 2 to 13 )

Greatness is not solely about what you can do but about who you are at Swanbourne House, it describes learners who have allowed their failures as well as their successes to define them, shaping qualities of character – resilience, self-belief and risk-taking; as these are the companions on the road to potential. At Swanbourne, every child is encouraged and supported to unlock their potential and discover what really inspires them to learn and succeed. I am proud to say that our children are happy, and excel in not only their learning, but in their all-round character too.Understanding and promoting the whole child is our priority as we prepare to send each one off to their carefully chosen senior school with the energy, enthusiasm and resilience to cope with failure and to enjoy success. We pride ourselves in strong academic results within a nurturing and safe environment which enables us to foster positive mental wellbeing and a lifelong love for learning so each child has the opportunity to achieve their optimum goals and become a “change maker.”

Facilities

Lower School
Children in the Lower School (Foundation – Year 4) have a happy, secure and safe environment in which they are nurtured. We deliver a motivating and meaningful curriculum, which inspires a love of learning. The children flourish academically and have an excellent rapport with their form teachers, who pay close attention to individual needs.Lower School pupils are principally taught in form groups with each form tutor teaching English and Maths. The foundation skills are taught with reading and phonics being prioritised. Maths is taught using a mastery approach, which has as its core belief that all children will be confident, articulate mathematicians.

Middle School
Year 5 and Year 6 are taught by experienced subject specialists for all subjects, and are set according to their performance levels in core academic subjects. Increased independence in learning, organisation and time management is a key focus in these formative middle years. The children will have frequent discussions with their teachers to help plan their next steps for progress. Personal Tutors oversee the children’s academic progress and welfare and they are the first point of contact for parents. It is also at this stage that we work with families to consider the increasingly early decisions required by senior school admissions processes, and start to identify high fliers aiming for scholarships and awards at their next schools.

Upper school
In Year 7 and Year 8 the children continue to experience a rich and rigorous curriculum which is assessed by the Pre-Senior Baccalaureate (PSB), Academic Scholarships and, in some cases, further bespoke senior school examinations.By now, pupils are confident learners and use their subject targets to discuss their progress with their Personal Tutors. Revision and study skills are taught and the children participate in a careers programme. During these final two years, the children learn the importance of maintaining a healthy balance between academic studies and participation in all other areas of school life. There are considerable co-curricular opportunities in these year groups and the children begin to master how to manage their time effectively. Pupils in the final two years at Swanbourne also undertake an extensive course of leadership training.

Features

Things to note

Arts
The Arts play a central role in shaping personal, social, cultural and creative identity. Learning through performance and expression allows children to cultivate their passions and talents as well as providing limitless opportunities for sharing thought and feelings. They showcase over 40 music and drama productions every year with curriculum music and drama for everyone.

Music
Music at Swanbourne House plays an integral part of school life for every child. Class music lessons involving listening, appraising, composing and performing skills are taught across the school at least once a week. A great deal of the work we do is practical, as that is how we believe that children learn best: we have a wide range of classroom percussion instruments, as well as keyboards for children to use whenever the opportunity arises, and we always encourage children to use their own instruments if they are able.

Sport
The ethos is strong. Sport is inclusive and individual and team perseverance is key. They engage in sport every day, compete in weekly fixtures and enjoy elite coaching from professional players and national governing body accredited coaches through our in-house sports department and a bespoke external Masterclass programme.Swanbourne children represent us in a number of IAPS tournaments, in the UK and abroad, and also play sport at club, county and national level. Girls’ sport is given every bit as much attention and focus as boys’ sport.

Co Curricular
Co-curricular activities encourage pupils to enrich their lives by exploring interests outside their normal curriculum. With superb facilities, extensive grounds and specialist staff to call upon, they are able to introduce the children to an exciting range of practical, physical, creative and adventurous activities and clubs. We want children to express themselves in a number of ways and find their strengths and passions. The comprehensive and progressive co-curricular programme encourages pupils to try something new and discover their talents. the activities are developed with progress and growth in mind, to allow continuity and transition of skills and participation as children move through the school with clubs such as Rugby Tots, Art, Coding, Running, Little Glee, Yoga and Bushcraft available from Foundation upwards.
