St Hugh's School is Independent Secondary school in Not applicable for kids aged 3 to 13 (Gender - 3 to 13 )
St Hugh’s aims to educate all children in an enriching, happy environment, which nurtures the academic potential, mental health and physical wellbeing of every pupil. St Hugh's is an inclusive school. They aim: To provide an outstanding academic foundation for all abilities, enabling them to acquire the skills to become self-assured, lifelong, independent learners. To promote a creative and reflective learning environment where all pupils are supported to nurture their individual talents across the whole curriculum. To encourage a readiness and confidence to engage in a wide range of opportunities, whilst approaching new tasks and challenges with resilience. To develop a moral and spiritual awareness in pupils which leads them to value themselves and others as individuals. To prepare the pupils for life beyond St Hugh’s by developing a collective awareness of their roles and responsibilities within the school and the wider community.
Upper School
They have a clear sense of purpose: to give the pupils a secure educational foundation and the confidence to be adaptable and independent as they prepare for life beyond the school. They aim to give all of them the opportunity and encouragement to develop their own interests and talents, while learning to work and play together and to contribute positively to their community. The aim is to foster confidence and a love of learning. In the Upper School, pupils from Years 5 to 8 are placed in a form for registration with a form teacher and then move to a specialist subject teacher in a subject room for each lesson. A full list of subject teachers, as well as administrative and support staff and matrons, can be found on the website and is also printed in the front of the termly calendar.
Middle School
The aim in Middle School is to build on the experiences of life and education every individual has enjoyed. In a safe, inspirational and encouraging environment, the children in Middle School are given wide and varied opportunities in which to excel. Equipping the children with skills essential to being successful learners throughout life such as independence, resilience, creativity and problem solving, ensures that they are able to apply themselves most effectively to whatever tasks are presented to them and are able to be ambitious in their achievements.
Pre Prep
The aim is to provide an excellent start to your child’s education. They believe that nurturing a love of reading and an enthusiasm for learning will establish the firm foundations necessary for future success. In the Pre-Prep Department, they provide small classes within a caring and friendly environment in which every girl and boy is encouraged and each achievement is recognised. The curriculum is broad and teaching is tailored to meet the needs of the children: academic work and creative play are both central to the Early Years development.
Nursery
The Cottage Nursery at St Hugh’s opened in September 2010 in an exciting newly extended building next door to the Pre-Prep Department. The nursery has a warm homely feel as it was previously the groundsman’s cottage and still boasts many of its original features, including sash windows and the old fireplaces. The sympathetic renovation has meant that the nursery is a secure and self-contained unit whilst at the same time integrating with the rest of the school. Fun and exciting activities are planned on a daily basis following the curriculum for the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS).
Forest School
The two sites occupy more than three acres of the school grounds, one predominately for Nursery, Reception and Year 1, and a much larger site accessed over a small bridge for children in Year 2 and above. Alongside this is a fenced vegetable garden, consisting of raised beds for vegetables, flowers, herbs and a small pond. The children assist in planting seeds and bulbs. Annually the pond affords us the opportunity to see frogspawn develop into frogs, which they then release into the nearby stream. The garden also provides an abundance of insects to aid pollination.
Learning Support
Children with special educational needs are welcome at St Hugh’s and we have an experienced Learning Support member of the staff in each of the three stages of the school. These specialist teachers are responsible for planning and co-ordinating the provision for those pupils identified prior to entrance and also for those whose needs are identified as they move through the school.
SPORT
Sport plays a very important role in the daily programme for every St Hugh’s pupil. We believe that providing quality and varied sporting opportunities is a key part of school life; for general skills, health and fitness but also for the fun and sportsmanship that active participation and successful competition can bring. The emphasis is placed on enjoyment as much as sporting excellence and success.
MUSIC
Music plays an important part in the life of St Hugh’s and we have a vibrant and thriving music department. Every child takes part in concerts and musical activities and they encourage all pupils to explore their musical potential through the myriad of opportunities on offer. All children have classroom music in the curriculum and every child is able to take instrumental lessons given by fourteen visiting specialist teachers. In Middle and Upper School they are delighted to provide over a dozen groups ranging from rock bands to large choirs and from small instrumental ensembles to the school orchestra.
DRAMA
Drama is recognised as being a vital part of the school curriculum for all pupils at St Hugh’s. Every child – from Nursery to Year 8 – has opportunities to use Drama as a way of working together, gaining self-confidence and expressing themselves freely through acting, singing and dancing.A number of our pupils achieve Drama scholarships to their senior schools and others go on to study Drama at A level and beyond. By the time they leave St Hugh’s, all pupils will have had experience of mime, improvisation, role play; of playing games to develop rhythm and team building skills and to have prepared for participation in various performances.
ART
At St Hugh’s they aim to encourage the artist that is within each of them by fostering an enjoyment of the visual arts, developing the imagination and providing the skills necessary for pupils to express their ideas. They experiment with as many different materials and processes as possible so that pupils are given every opportunity to develop their creativity and reach their potential.
