Facilities

Academic
The boys at Cothill enjoy a broad and exciting academic curriculum built around a strong foundation in English and Maths. From the outset, boys are taught by subject specialists across the board, whose passion and skill mean that every boy can be brought on in a nurturing and supportive fashion as identified by the 2016 ISI inspection report. At Cothill House class sizes are small - 18 is the maximum and 14 the average - enabling every boy to receive plenty of individual attention across all of the traditional academic disciplines. However,  Cothill has also innovated over the years.  All Year 7 boys spend one whole term at the school’s Château near Toulouse, where there is immersion in all things French. General Studies is also now an integral part of the curriculum from year 5 upwards, giving the boys a broad perspective on politics and current affairs, ethical issues and the story of art since the classical era. Theme Weeks are a highlight of every year.

Features

Things to note

Extra-Curricular & Clubs
Thursday afternoon is anticipated with some relish. Organised games, though much loved, are set aside to make way for the freedom of clubs. These present an opportunity for choice and experimentation, for discovery as well as for testing your limits.Football and other outdoor games such as Capturing The Flag or playing in the nets are always popular but for many, the variety of other activities proves to be too tempting. Climbing is in demand and is certainly demanding, while Table Tennis has produced great players. Fishermen are attracted to Fly Tying while Golf, Swimming, Art, Modelling, Science and Engineering have dedicated followers. Woodwork with “PC” has been central to the Cothill experience for as long as anyone can remember.

Performing Arts & Drama
All boys are encouraged to take part in drama during their time at Cothill, and the opportunities to do so are plentiful. For many boys these will be remembered amongst the highlights of their time at the school. The school stage represents a very different environment from the classroom and playing fields, but provides the boys with an abundance of opportunities to master new skills in both preparation and performance. As a school, they are very proud of the quality of our productions, and the photos and video snippets on this site represent nothing more than a taster!

Sport
Participation in individual and team sport creates more rounded individuals and, as such, is a fundamental aspect of Cothill life. The ethos focuses on enabling boys of all abilities to reach their full sporting potential. With sports as a part of daily life at school, there are plenty of opportunities. The main team games we play are Football, Rugby, Hockey and Cricket. In addition there are a number of minor sports including swimming, skiing, squash, tennis, gymnastics, athletics, chess, shooting, fives, polo, climbing, basketball, table tennis, golf and cross-country.

Music
From bagpipes to bassoons, the boys enjoy learning, practising and performing with their chosen musical instruments, and the school enjoys a reputation for turning out musicians of the highest calibre. There is a Brass Band, Jazz Band and Orchestra, as well as many other ensembles that provide the boys with the valuable experience of playing together and performing. Regular lunchtime recitals offer boys of all standards an opportunity to perform. Have a look at our Rock Music and Orchestral Music pages to enjoy some of the best musical performances in recent years.
