Facilities

Curriculum
They are very fortunate at Saint Pierre to have complete freedom over the Curriculum. This enables us to use The National Curriculum as a guideline but to add the own flare and creativity. As well as core lessons in English, Maths, Science, ICT, Humanities, RE and PSHE, pupils here benefit from teaching by specialist teachers in Spanish, French, Current Affairs, Art, PE, Drama and Music. In Mathematics and English our curriculum, whilst being shaped by the National Curriculum, is directed towards the 11 Plus examinations.  In year 5 this emphasis is tighter although lessons also accommodate those who don’t wish to take the examination at the start of year 6.

Nursery
At Saint Pierre Nursery the child is at the heart of all they do. They take account of their needs, interests and stages of development and use this to provide a nurturing and stimulating learning environment.During the morning sessions children are organised into appropriate groups for their learning, not age related, but ability related. These activities are carefully planned to meet the varying stages of development for the children and encourage those children that are ready to have the opportunity to develop their phonic and maths skills.

Reception
In Reception, the children enjoy a well-balanced curriculum founded upon the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) alongside our wide-ranging additional curriculum. The additional curriculum covers a variety of topics, festivals and celebrations from around the world. They also incorporate the interests of the individual child within this additional curriculum, which involves children sharing their own knowledge before building on that knowledge in class. Circle-time is used daily as a way of re-capping previous learning as well as introducing new topics for daily teacher-led activities.  Throughout the day the children have the opportunity to freely explore activities in all areas of the curriculum.

Features

Things to note

Clubs
Clubs run after school and at lunch times and enable pupils to enjoy a whole range of different activities.  The clubs are often chosen by the pupils themselves and are run by both teachers and outside specialists.  All staff are DBS checked and meet the school’s standards expected for all adults working with our children.

Sports
Sports skills are taught in PE lessons using both our playground and the fields at Chalkwell Park.  During these lessons both boys and girls will experience; Football, Rugby, Cricket, Tennis, Netball, Hockey, Cross Country, Athletics and Rounders.  All pupils in years 1-6 have swimming lessons with specialist instructors every Tuesday.

Music
At Saint Pierre they understand the life long benefits Music can create for the children. They aim to inspire and encourage children’s creativity and develop a passion for Music. Children from Nursery to Year 6 all benefit from weekly Music lessons. They develop various skills including performing, listening, evaluating, producing and exploring. Children explore a wide range of genres from Nursery Rhymes and the Blues to Rock and Pop. Younger children can explore various percussion instruments and learn about orchestras. Years 3-6 curriculum offers, whole class, descant recorder instrumental lessons, enhancing their knowledge of notation, theory and giving them the experience of playing within a group. Children are also encouraged to express themselves composing music.

Drama
Drama gives a great opportunity for the pupils to be creative in an enthusiastic and enjoyable atmosphere. The inspiring Drama lessons allow the pupils to thrive practically and artistically whilst engaging with their fascinating imaginations. The practical lesson also enables our pupils to develop their; communication skills, their ability to speak publicly, work collaboratively and increase or even find their confidence. Drama often reinforces our schools curriculum by bringing the theory of other subjects to life in short Drama performances.
