Description

Ludgrove School Trust Limited is Independent Secondary school in Non-selective for kids aged 8 to 13 (Gender - 8 to 13 )

Ludgrove is a thriving fortnightly boarding school for boys age 8 to 13, which sits in 130 acres of spectacular grounds and it is a magical place to spend five years of childhood. They believe the homely environment provides a wonderful place where boys flourish and realise their potential. As a school, they are unashamedly ambitious for every boy and are proud of our strong academic record. The boys have a wealth of opportunities: a stimulating curriculum, exceptional facilities and a vibrant extracurricular programme with exposure to music, drama, sport and art. We aim to develop the boys’ confidence in a caring supportive environment, where they are valued as individuals and learn to live as a community. Friendships are made for life and the unique Ludgrove spirit allows boys to thrive in an atmosphere of high achievement, happiness, good manners and kindness.

Facilities

Academic
The main focus of the Ludgrove curriculum is to build firm academic foundations and encourage a love of learning. They prepare boys for public school assessments, Common Entrance and scholarship examinations. They have a very successful track record of sending boys to Eton, Harrow, Marlborough, Radley, Stowe, Sherborne, Wellington, Winchester and other distinguished schools. They aim to realise the highest academic expectations for all the boys within a disciplined and well-structured system of proven learning techniques. First class teaching from dedicated, motivated and well-qualified staff combined with small class sizes (9-15 pupils) enable us to aim high for each boy whilst allowing them to develop at the correct pace.

Features

Things to note

Sport
They recognise that being involved in team sports reap far more benefits than just physical benefits which is why they include all of the boys in team sports throughout their time at Ludgrove. They firmly believe that there is a direct correlation between physical activity and academic performance and recognise the benefits of an increased sense of self as a result of better social interactions and building stronger relationships. They see the importance of being part of a team at whatever level and therefore take trouble to give everybody the chance to represent the school at some stage during the term.

Extra-Curricular
Thursday afternoons are reserved for hobbies and clubs. The boys can choose these at the beginning of each term and the list available is designed to cater to a wide variety of interests, creativity and sporting activity. The aim of this afternoon is for the boys to choose an activity they really enjoy and that interests them. The afternoon is divided into two halves, so that the boys can enjoy two different activities.

Music
The boys have a class music lesson every week. The aim is to stimulate and maintain lasting pupil enjoyment, interest and curiosity. By exposing boys to a wide range of material, we aim to enable them to see music as a major cultural feature and part of a wider body of knowledge and skills. In addition to their academic music lesson, over two-thirds of the boys have private instrumental lessons and a considerable number learn more than one instrument.

Drama
Drama at Ludgrove has a high profile and we regard it as an integral part of school life. Quite apart from educational and enjoyment factors, it is well known that acting is a great boost to overall confidence in young people. The school’s new Performing Arts Centre gives the boys a wonderful space in which to perform. Almost every boy will be on the Ludgrove stage at least once a year. For those more interested in the production side, there are opportunities to become involved in backstage, technical and set design.

Admission Details

Year 4 entry
They have no formal entrance exam for boys joining in Year 4, but they do ask for a report from the previous school so that we can be sure we place a boy in the right division.  Once a boy arrives at the School, they carry out an assessment of his reading, writing and arithmetic skills. They have a disciplined academic structure and they pride ourselves on the fact that, despite no entrance exam, the boys still go to the top public schools.

Entry at Year 5 and above
For entry into Year 5 and above, registered boys and their parents are invited to visit Ludgrove for a 1-1 visit in the Autumn of the year prior to entry.  This visit will include a meeting and tour of the School with Mr and Mrs Barber and an assessment.  The assessment includes spelling, reading and maths and boys need not prepare for these tests – they are designed to enable us to see where a boy would naturally fit into the existing cohort.  Offers of places are subject to assessment results and the number of places available.

Fees

School fees are charged termly and cover all the costs incurred in the usual course of a boy’s education and boarding during the term. From September 2022 the fee is £10,300 per term. They are invoiced in advance and payable by the first day of each term.

Scholarships

Bursary Awards
The Governors of Ludgrove are committed to broadening access to the school in order to ensure that, as far as possible, boys who would otherwise thrive here and be an asset to the school are not prevented from coming for financial reasons. To that end, limited funds are available on a means-tested basis to assist with school fees. Such assistance is necessarily aimed at prospective parents but may exceptionally be provided to existing parents or guardians whose circumstances have materially changed.
