Facilities

Early Years (3 – 4 years)
Children can start in nursery from the term that they are 3 years old and then move up to transition in the September after they turn 4 years old. We follow the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum where children’s learning is planned for in terms of prime and specific areas of development. The prime areas are important because they lay the foundations for children’s success in all other areas of learning and of life. These are personal, social and emotional development, physical development and communication and language. The specific areas provide the range of experiences and opportunities for children to broaden their knowledge and skills. These are literacy, mathematics, understanding the world and expressive arts and design.

Key Stage 1 (5 – 7 years)
Children move from our early years onto the key stage one section of our Prep School; years 1, 2 and 3. Children are provided with an excellent start to their formal education with an exciting and stimulating curriculum. In key stage one we start the specialist teaching of mathematics and English. This is alongside specialist teaching in French, PE, drama, art and music. Additionally, from year 3 children have four periods of science with our specialist science teacher in the science lab.Whilst they offer a broad, rich curriculum we place an emphasis on the teaching and learning of mathematics and English. We follow a mastery type approach to mathematics teaching; based on the Singapore Maths method.  The East Asian countries that rely heavily on this approach have achieved the highest pupil rankings in The Trends in International Maths and Science Study (TIMSS) for the last 20 years. By using this method of teaching in our school we expose our girls to the best teaching practices. In terms of English, the children develop a love for reading through our ‘class reader’ lessons as well as daily reading aloud. Additionally, children have formal composition, grammar, comprehension and spelling lessons throughout Key Stage 1.

Key Stage 2 (7 – 11 Years)
Children continue through our Prep School from key stage 1 into key stage 2;  Years 4, 5 and 6. Teaching and learning in Key Stage 2 prepares the girls both emotionally and educationally for entrance examinations into secondary school. We continue to provide specialist teaching in mathematics, English, science, French, PE, art, drama and music with the humanities, RE, ICT and PSHCE being taught by the class teacher.Girls are encouraged to study hard and take ownership of their own learning; they know how well they are doing and what they need to do to improve. Our preparations for secondary school examinations begin in year 4 where the girls have weekly lessons on verbal and non-verbal reasoning skills. Additionally, past examination questions will be completed as a whole class. In years 5 and 6 the girls continue to work on their verbal and non-verbal reasoning skills and complete past English and mathematics test papers on a regular basis. As the entrance examinations get closer we teach the girls in very small groups working on their individual areas for academic improvement as well as interview skills. By the time the girls sit their entrance examinations, they are well grounded, well prepared and confident in their abilities.

Things to note

Workshops and Visits
Throughout the year they regularly organise travelling workshops and visiting speakers. The girls benefit hugely from these visitors who enhance our delivery of the curriculum. In the past these have included: dance, music, drama, history geography, science, PSHE and maths puzzle days.Every term each year group goes on a class trip. These trips are planned as an extension of the curriculum and are linked to topic work completed at school. We travel by public transport or make use of our school minibus for longer journeys. Some examples of past visits are Nursery to Bracknell discovery centre, Year 1 to the Natural History Museum, Year 2 to Brighton and Year 4 to the Globe theatre. In addition we organize a residential trip to France for the girls in Key Stage 2 and the girls in Year 6 visit Flatford Mill in their last term with us.

Clubs
An extensive range of clubs are available after school until 4.30pm. These clubs are available to all pupils from nursery to Year 6 and are split into three age groups to better meet the needs of the children. They are run predominantly by our staff but we also use outside specialist companies.  Our clubs’ programme includes: tennis, netball, street dance, debating, film making, cooking, crafts, Spanish, Mandarin, tone chimes, computer programming and touch typing. We also have a choir and orchestra club, both of which run during lunch time.
