Durston House is a vibrant, stimulating, energetic and forward-looking school. They have a proud and long history with a fine record of achievement, whilst we look forward with confidence and energy.
At Durston they are proud of our diverse community, one which values people through mutual respect, compassion and warmth. At Durston they welcome pupils from all ethnic, cultural and religious backgrounds; this is a school where pupils are taught from their earliest experiences, that a generosity of spirit, mutual respect and fairness really matter.
Curiculum
The curriculum we offer is very broad, deep and rigorous, allowing ample opportunity for pupils to question and explore. Independent learning is valued and encouraged by our well-qualified staff, always keen to inspire and engage pupils beyond the classroom. Our outstanding teaching is supported by small class sizes, where individuality and independence can flourish. An education here is based upon academic rigour through excellent teaching, encouraging our pupils to explore, question, take risks, and develop their creativity, communication and teamwork – all central to successful life-long learning. Our boys demand to be stimulated and challenged by their teachers, and in turn the expectations of our boys to be the best version of themselves is equally important. All of this is achieved through a spirit of humility and quiet determination.
Boys education
A boy’s education here is shaped by the development of his character by giving him the confidence and skills to excel, his curiosity to learn and discover more, and his expanding capability to succeed in all he takes on. These three concepts, Character, Curiosity and Capability are the cornerstones of his success at Durston House and his success in life.
Sport
Boys are able to experience a wide variety of sports in their time at Durston House. They benefit from the teaching and coaching of three full-time specialist PE teachers during their lessons, and at Games, where the specialists are supported by other teachers and sports assistants. Through structured and planned sporting activities, inter-House competitions, fixtures and other inter-school tournaments, the capability of all boys in respective sports improves year on year.
Music
All lessons are taught by specialist music teachers. Music lessons are practical in nature and provide enjoyable musical experiences through listening, composing, performing and appraising. Singing lies at the heart of our Music provision. The Kodály method of music education and Solfège are used for teaching both basic and advanced musical skills. Throughout their time at Durston House, boys can choose to be involved in a number of different co-curricular groups and individual instrumental lessons, catering for all levels of experience and abilities. The most advanced musicians are encouraged to apply for Music Scholarships to their chosen Senior Schools.
Drama
School Productions are a highlight of the calendar here at Durston House. Annually, there is a production created and performed by the Pre-Prep, the Junior School and the Year 8 boys, each of which celebrates how truly capable Durston boys are.

Durston House actively seeks to broaden access to the education it provides by offering financial support to pupils who might otherwise be precluded from joining the school.
The school is committed to the provision of bursaries (means-tested financial support), which may be awarded in the form of discount for up to 100% of the tuition fees payable, dependent on the financial circumstances of the applicants, and to assist with other chargeable activities for those awarded 100% bursaries.
Bursaries are offered to pupils who seek to join the school in Years 3-7. A bursary is considered after a prospective pupil has been assessed and deemed suited, academically and emotionally, to the expectations of Durston House. Parents complete the Bursary Application Form, which is then evaluated by the school to see whether any form of bursary can be offered.
Information about the provision of bursaries, and the procedure for applying, can be obtained from the Registrar.
