Maths
Mathematics is important in everyday life and, with this in mind, the purpose of Mathematics at Eastcourt is to develop an ability to solve problems, to reason, to think logically and to work systematically and accurately. All children are challenged and encouraged to excel in Maths. New mathematical concepts are introduced using ‘Concrete, Pictorial and Abstract’ approaches enabling all children to experience hands-on learning when discovering new mathematical topics, allowing them to have models and images to aid their understanding. Arithmetic and basic maths skills are practised regularly to ensure key mathematical concepts are embedded and children can recall this information to see the links between topics in Maths.

English
Central to good English teaching is meaningful dialogue. Although closed questions can generate a superficial sense of pace in a classroom, it is much more important to provide time for children to think. They need to learn to interact with the text, develop their understanding and their critical thinking skills, and express opinions. Asking the children to discuss an open question in pairs or groups before feeding back to the class gives many more of them the opportunity to speak and think.

Science
They seek to extend children’s natural curiosity and eagerness to ask questions about the world, enabling them to develop and evaluate explanations through experimental evidence and modelling. Teamwork, independence and inventiveness figure in our learning. We aim to provide opportunities to ensure pupils acquire knowledge which they can retain in the long term. Lessons often include the practical nature of experimenting.

History
History is all about people. The study of people of different types, from different times and different places is the most important aspect of our work.History fires pupils’ curiosity about the past in Britain and the wider world. Pupils consider how the past influences the present, what past societies were like, how these societies organised their politics, and what beliefs and cultures influenced people’s actions. As they do this, pupils develop a chronological framework for their knowledge of significant events and people in history. They see the diversity of human experience, and understand more about themselves as individuals and members of society. What they learn can influence their decisions about personal choices, attitudes and values.

Geography
The study of geography helps our pupils understand how the world in which we live shapes our lives, and how we in turn shape the world around us.At Eastcourt we aim for a high-quality geography curriculum which should inspire in pupils a curiosity and fascination about the world and its people. The teaching should equip pupils with knowledge about places and people; resources in the environment; physical and human processes; and the formation and use of landscapes around the world. We also want children to develop practical geographical skills: collecting and analysing data; using maps, globes, aerial photographs and digital mapping to name and identify countries, continents and oceans; and communicating information in a variety of ways.

Early Years
The aim is to complete the Early Learning Goals and move on to the Key Stage 1 curriculum. It's a full school day. We write and read. Although there is much movement, there are quieter times in class where we sit on the carpet for a more focused activity. There is emphasis on learning the alphabet phonetically, and we teach our children to form their letters correctly. They hear all sorts of stories and talk about them too.Using bricks, blocks and shapes of all sorts, we begin to add and subtract as well as tackle topics such as shape, space and measurement.

Things to note

Music
At Eastcourt, the intention is that children gain a firm understanding of what music is through listening, singing, playing, evaluating, analysing, and composing across a wide variety of historical periods, styles, traditions and musical genres. They aim  to help children understand the value and importance of music in the wider community, and to ensure that they are able to use their musical skills, knowledge, and experiences to involve themselves in music in a variety of different contexts.

Sport
At Eastcourt we strive to create a culture which inspires an active generation to enjoy PE, encourage each other and achieve. We provide a safe and supportive environment for children to flourish in a range of different physical activities which is essential in supporting their physical, emotional, spiritual and moral development. We offer a dynamic, varied and stimulating program of activity to ensure that all children progress physically. All children are encouraged to develop their understanding of the way in which they can use their body, equipment and apparatus safely yet imaginatively to achieve their personal goals. They have the opportunity to enjoy being physically active, maintain a healthy lifestyle and using the medium of sport, increase their self-esteem. Our goal is for children to adopt a positive mind-set and believe that anything can be achieved with determination and resilience.
