They’ve been a charity for over 200 years, designing and delivering services that build resilience and aspiration in people and communities across the UK. They don’t just deliver alternative education, they also work across children’s social care, get people into work through apprenticeships and employability programmes, build stronger communities through social action, and deliver social justice and rehabilitation services (in prisons and in the community). But they don’t stop at changing lives on the frontline. They take any surplus and the learning from our delivery, and funnel that into public service reform – investing in new structures and programmes that do things differently and change the system for good.

Curriculum
They offer a full, flexible timetable alongside the national curriculum, with a focus on small group working. This covers Numeracy, Literacy, Information and Communications Technology (ICT), Citizenship, and Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education (PSHEe).Learners take part in regular feedback sessions with staff to encourage their personal development and help ensure the best possible transition to a mainstream or alternative setting. The safe environment encourages learners to develop their confidence and self-esteem.

They define pupils with Special Educational Needs & Disability (SEND) as those who have: ‘a significantly greater difficulty in learning than the majority of others of the same age, or has a disability which prevents or hinders him or her from making use of facilities of a kind generally provided for others of the same age in mainstream schools’ (Code of Practice 0-25). These difficulties may be physical, emotional, psychological, medical. The definition of learning difficulty does not apply to pupils who face barriers to learning due solely to having English as an additional language.
