Bedford Modern School (often called BMS) is an independent school in Bedford, England. BMS comprises a junior school (ages 6–11) and a senior school (ages 11–18).

Things to note
The Music Faculty caters for academic music teaching in addition to providing instrumental and vocal lessons for around 375 students.
Every year they run a huge range of trips, ranging from afternoon visits to local places of worship to a month trekking and carrying out community projects in the developing world; and everywhere in between.
They currently offer more than 30 different physical activities, with more than 100 teams and 1000 fixtures during the year. There are regular tours for Rugby Union, Hockey, Football, Netball and Cricket along with training camps for Rowing.
They also have an extensive House Programme which allows students to compete in more than 20 different sports.

Entrance Assessments into the Junior School (Years 3 – 5): The Junior School Assessment is split into two sessions-
Session 1 – A series of computerised assessments, interspersed with breaks and refreshments. The computerised assessments are designed to test:
A child’s developed ability (non-verbal reasoning)
Reading ability
Abilities in general mathematics and mental arithmetic
Spelling (Year 5 only).
Session 2 –
Reading – a typed passage will be provided by the school for the children to read. Questions will be asked to demonstrate understanding.
Creative Writing – a stimulus will be discussed and explored by candidates who will then be given approximately 15 minutes to plan their work and approximately half an hour to produce.
Fun Activities – children will be put into groups with children of the same age to join in a series of activities. Although they are designed to help them make new friends and feel more comfortable with the surroundings, they will be observed throughout the process for behaviour and co-operation skills.
Entrance Assessments into the Senior School (Years 7 and 9): Year 7 candidates will complete five elements as part of the assessment-
English creative writing – Candidates are asked to produce a piece of creative writing based on a piece of stimulus material provided
A series of computerised tests – We will be using standardised tests designed to measure academic potential and attainment focusing on verbal, non-verbal and mathematical skills.
Interview – Candidates will have a short interview with a senior member of staff which focuses on their academic and co-curricular strengths and interests, which will also include an assessment of their reading ability. In addition candidates will be asked to bring in an object they would be happy to discuss during the interview.
Year 9 candidates will complete five elements as part of the assessment:

Entrance Assessments into the Sixth Form (Year 12): Candidates will also be required to produce a piece of written work, which they must submit prior to interview and are expected to gain a minimum of Grade 6 at GCSE in the subjects they wish to study at A Level (please do note that some subjects may require at least a grade 7).Their ALIS* score must also be 6.0 or higher and they require a minimum of Grade 5 in both Maths and English.
