Wilmslow Preparatory School

Description

Wilmslow Preparatory School is Independent Primary school in Cheshire East for kids aged 3 to 11 (Gender - Mixed )

Wilmslow Preparatory is a small independent co-ed preparatory school with a big reputation. The School is located in the heart of Wilmslow in Cheshire. Wilmslow Preparatory first opened its doors in 1909, when the school was located on Grove Street in Wilmslow where it remained until its move to Grove Avenue in 1912. They are a small, inclusive school where each pupil is nurtured as an individual, and encouraged and inspired to achieve their very best, inside and outside the classroom. In this special learning environment, based on small class sizes and the needs of the individual, pupils do exceptionally well, achieving attainments significantly beyond national expectations. They also pride ourselves on our programme of sport, music, arts and extracurricular activities, and the traditional values of courtesy and good manners that we instil in our pupils.Through a partnership with The King’s School in Macclesfield our Infant and Junior Divisions are aligned academically whilst also sharing best practice. This provides an additional route for entry into King’s Senior Division.

Facilities

Early Years (Kindergarten and Reception)
In Kindergarten and Reception at Wilmslow Prep, our pupils discover, work and play in a kind, friendly, nurturing environment where they develop their skills and guide their first steps towards independence.Pupils are gently introduced to the fundamental elements of reading, writing and basic mathematics. They also enjoy Music, Drama, Modern Foreign Languages and PE lessons. The children are taught the values of polite manners, good behaviour and courtesy.

Key Stage 1 (Prep 1 & 2)
From five to seven years of age, our Key Stage 1 pupils progress through Prep 1 and 2 and this is a time of great individual development. During these years, pupils rapidly develop their learning skills, advancing in Numeracy, Literacy, Science and Humanities, all of which open up new possibilities in the acquisition of knowledge. In particular, improved literacy skills promote the pleasures of independent reading. The children’s horizons continue to be broadened by specialist teachers for Modern Foreign Languages, ICT, Science, Music, Drama, PE and Art.

Key Stage 2 (Prep 3 - 6)
Children are set extended goals as they enter Key Stage 2 and they expect the pupils to work hard to achieve the results of which they know they are capable. They believe it is vitally important that every child is valued and knows his or her own strengths and each child is constantly encouraged to achieve their personal best.Preparation for Senior School continues, with a carefully planned core and extended curriculum, specialist teachers for Maths, ICT, Science, Music, Drama, PE, Art and Modern Foreign Languages and the introduction of verbal and non-verbal reasoning. Many of the children represent the School in sports, music, drama and art competitions.

Features

Things to note

Art
Art contributes to the development of the whole child emotionally, aesthetically, physically, socially and cognitively. At WPS, they provide all the children with the opportunity to express themselves imaginatively and creatively, developing their understanding of the world around them. Across all age ranges, the children are exposed to many visual, tactile and sensory experiences.

Music
Music plays an integral part in the life of WPS and is celebrated at every opportunity. All pupils are encouraged to develop a love of and respect for music. With a specialist Music teacher, a dedicated team of peripatetic teachers for 1-1 tuition, choirs, an orchestra, productions, concerts, competitions and festivals, music thrives here and they encourage all our pupils to develop their skills and confidence, no matter what their starting point.

Speech & Drama
Speech and drama at Wilmslow Preparatory plays a vital part in developing the confidence and life skills of our pupils. They believe participation in the English Speaking Board exams is at the heart of what gives our pupils the edge when they enter the wider world. From their first day here, pupils are given frequent opportunities to perform in public, preparing pieces for special assemblies and taking part in competitions such as the Alderley Edge Festival. These experiences provide the children with the opportunity to develop their confidence, whilst performing in front of a wider audience and professional adjudicators.

Sport
WPS stands out at prep school level having a state of the art, stand alone sports hall. This provides a fabulous learning environment for our children and also provides fantastic flexibility in all weather teaching.Pupils enjoy participation in many sports; your child will be introduced to sports such as hockey, tennis, netball, rugby, athletics, cross country, football, cricket, judo, fencing, yoga and dance. The pupils consistently achieve outstanding sporting success at local, regional and national level and many continue to do so during their later years in school, university years and beyond.

Fees

Fees & Bursaries
The Governors view independent school bursary awards as important in helping to ensure the children from families who would otherwise not be able to afford the fees to access the education they offer. The School does not have a large endowment and in funding our awards they have to be mindful that they must ensure a balance between fee-paying parents, many of whom make considerable personal sacrifices to fund their child’s education, and those benefiting from the awards.
