Description

The Yehudi Menuhin School is Independent Secondary school in Not applicable for kids aged 8 to 19 (Gender - 8 to 19 )

The celebrated violinist Yehudi Menuhin founded his school in Surrey in 1963 to provide a place for musically gifted children from around the world to develop their talents to the highest level within a nurturing and stimulating academic environment, regardless of their economic background.Today’s school provides a holistic education for 86 exceptional students aged from 8 to 19, with specialist tuition on the stringed instruments, piano and classical guitar. The students split their time between their academic and musical studies, and are given many opportunities to perform in front of an audience. Concerts take place regularly in our own Menuhin Hall, but also in local schools, care homes and churches, carrying on Menuhin’s belief in the importance of giving back to the community.

Facilities

Academic
The School is divided into four flexible groups based not purely on age but also on ability. This group system enables the school to form viable class sizes and provides a stimulating academic environment. The curriculum is designed to be balanced and to do full justice to both the musical and the general education of each pupil. All classes are small with excellent opportunities for individual attention. Key Stage Two, Key Stage Three, GCSE, AS and A Level courses are taught in core subjects within the National Curriculum by a well-qualified and dedicated team of staff. They take a great pride in our academic record. In 2020, 77% of the grades achieved at A level were A*or A, with 50% being grade A*; at GCSE 65% were at grade A*or A, with 44% being grade A*. This was alongside incredible musical achievements. These outstanding results demonstrate the commitment to challenging in equal measure both the musical and intellectual talents of the gifted musicians we are privileged to teach.

Features

Things to note

Drama
Enthusiastic participation in drama helps the development of platform presentation and is a lively voluntary activity. The School play is produced each year, often performed in the spring term, and is open to all pupils who wish to take part, whether as an actor or in a technical capacity. In recent years the School has performed an adaptation of Shakespeare's The Tempest, set in a boarding school rather than on an island, and a new play written for the pupils about the domestic life of the 17th Century diarist Samuel Pepys. Both plays used live music composed and performed by the pupils.

Duke of Edinburgh
Pupils can take part in the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme from C3 onwards. This is a national scheme that operates throughout the UK and was founded by HRH the Duke of Edinburgh in 1956. Joining the scheme gives the students the opportunity to experience new activities, and to develop new or existing skills. There are three progressive levels: Bronze, Silver and Gold. Each student creates his or her own DofE programme by choosing a volunteering, physical or skills activity and by going on a camping expedition. On a Wednesday lunch time they have chosen to help the community by volunteering in the local charity shops or by helping at Cobham day centre, where the clients have really looked forward to the visits of the pupils. Most choose music as their skill and the choices for the physical activity have included yoga, running, swimming and football.
