The Family Learning School is a progressive independent primary school in south London for children aged 3 to 11. We deliver inspiring, personalised education to small classes with high staff-to-child ratios, valuing creative as well as academic learning.They began life as a homeschool group founded by two working mothers. Our aim was to create a joyful, familial environment in which to develop and celebrate the unique potential of each child – academic, emotional and physical.
All-Day Forest Education
Children are led through a number of focused activities, learning about the wonders of nature and science, building campfires, constructing dens and making rope-swings and pulleys. The majority of the day, however, is child-led. Tree-climbing and other ‘risky play’ is supported. Children develop confidence and independence while collaborating to create their own fun.
Classroom Days
On days when they remain ‘on-site’, we offer plenty of opportunities for the children to be creative, learn through play and enjoy our specially designed outdoor space. We also focus on developing essential literacy, numeracy and other academic skills, both in small groups and on a one-to-one basis. Before lunch every day, children practise the art of mindfulness and meditation.
Adventure Days
Each week children enjoy at least one off-site educational visit, giving them the chance to explore new environments, develop their confidence, communicate with different people and learn ‘from life’. We use adventure days as a way to enhance classroom learning and inspire children to engage with the wider world. The places we visit include museums, swimming pools, libraries, places of worship, working farms, equestrian centres and nursing homes.
The newly renovated premises in Rushey Green offers a light-filled, open environment where children can explore and enjoy a variety of experiences that channel learning through creative play. Our focus on academic learning increases as each child demonstrates that she or he is ready. At this stage, children work in small groups and one-to-one with a teacher, ensuring they become confident and able learners ready to face challenges and learn from their mistakes.
