Stoneygate School

Description

Stoneygate School is Independent Secondary school in Non-selective for kids aged 3 to 16 (Gender - 3 to 16 )

The beautiful older buildings stand alongside modern science labs and sports facilities; they value books and technology; we respect the unique culture of LGS Stoneygate, cultivated since the nineteenth century, yet seek to prepare the pupils for the modern world. Within the glorious surroundings, they possess a deep and genuine commitment to provide a first-class education, one through which our pupils develop a passion for learning, a capacity for independent thought and an appreciation of academic rigor.Yet there is much more to LGS Stoneygate than our academic curriculum. Small class sizes mean close attention to suit the needs of all pupils and space to learn and grow on our forty acre campus. The close-knit community is one in which everyone is known as an individual, yet one where everyone plays their part to enable them to field successful sports teams, play together in orchestras and stage drama productions.

Facilities

Pre-Prep (Reception to Year 2)
The Pre-Prep department consists of Reception, Year 1 and Year 2. At the age of four, children enter the warm and welcoming environment of the Pre-Prep. They will spend three years here before moving on to the Preparatory department. The school day runs from 8.30 to 3.15 and after school care is also available. The focus is to provide a positive and enriching environment in order to develop happy, confident children who are keen to learn and embrace new ideas. There is a strong family ethos in the department and every child is known and nurtured individually.

Prep (Years 3-6)
The Prep department is comprised of children in Years 3 to 6. As they move through this part of the school, the children receive more and more specialist teaching. Their progress continues to be carefully monitored and parents are kept well informed by means of regular parent/teacher meetings and reports. Parents are always welcome to contact teachers if they have any concerns about their children. When pupils reach Year 5, they can stay for an hour after tea to do their homework or ‘prep’, as it is known, at school.

Senior School (Years 7 to 11)
It is anticipated that those who join them prior to Year 7 will, in the vast majority of cases, remain until at least age 13. More will join in Year 7, at age 11, with the clear intention to continue to age 16. Year 7 is an important year where our pupils make the transition into Senior School. Small changes to the school uniform, for example, differentiate these pupils from the younger years.Year 9 signals the beginning of key stage 4 and is a broad and balanced foundation year for courses to be followed up to age 16. Moving on up the school, pupils are given more responsibility, with one Year 11 pupil being made School Captain and all year 10 and 11 taking roles as prefects. As prefects, pupils have reading buddies in Pre-Prep and take on break and lunchtime duties and librarian roles. Prefects also lead charity initiatives and environmental projects.

Features

Things to note

Co-curricular Music
The Music Department is vibrant and long-established: we have a strong curriculum, enhanced by a super team of Visiting Music Teachers. There are well over 100 individual instrumental and vocal lessons taking place each week in school and pupils take places in the National Children’s Orchestra and the National Youth Choirs of Great Britain. Individual instrumental and vocal lessons are available to all pupils from Year 3 and there are special arrangements for younger pupils with special interest in Music.

Sport
Sport at Stoneygate plays a huge part in each pupil’s school life - the physical benefits, the fostering of team spirit, the encouragement and acceptance of those of all standards with the courage and willingness to have a go. Every child is in one of four Leagues and is expected to represent their League in Intra-League Competitions. In addition, every child regardless of their ability will be given the opportunity to represent the school in a friendly fixture against another school.

School Trips
Pupils visit theatres, museums and places of historical geographical interest. Years 3 & 4 children take part in an annual residential PGL trip, while Years 5 & 6 children attend an annual outward bounds residential. Biannually they organise a Senior Choir tour and a French tour.

Forest School
Outdoor learning at LGS Stoneygate Forest School, Outdoor learning is an important way for children to develop their physical abilities, confidence and imagination. That is why they have developed the outdoor education programme, Forest School, which allows children from Reception to Year 2 to experience challenging activities safely within the school grounds four times a year. Having seen how beneficial Forest School is, we have incorporated time within the PSHE curriculum for Years 2 to 6. In addition, some of our Year 6-10 pupils participate in a lunchtime Forest School.
