St Johns School

Description

St Johns School is Independent Secondary school in Selective for kids aged 3 to 16 (Gender - 3 to 16 )

St John’s School is a co-educational independent day school for children aged two to sixteen years.  Founded in 1928 the school has long provided academic excellence in a caring environment. The school instils all the virtues of politeness, integrity and consideration of others into our pupils and this creates a unique atmosphere where learning, creativity and success are enjoyed by everyone.  They believe that results can only be achieved by hard work and our pupils acquire the skill early on.Set in eight acres overlooking Lake Meadows, St John’s School has both space inside the classrooms and outside.  The school is conveniently located close to excellent public transport links via bus to Basildon, Langdon Hills, Chelmsford and Thurrock.  The school is a five minute walk to Billericay Station which is on the Greater Anglia Line running from London Liverpool Street to Southend Victoria.

Facilities

Nursery & Pre-Preparatory
St John’s Pre-Reception is situated within our purpose-built Kindergarten building, enabling the children to become familiar with other children in Reception, Lower Kindergarten (Year 1) and Upper Kindergarten (Year 2) and their members of staff who may teach them once they move on from Pre-Reception. They have two bright and colourful rooms which are dedicated to our Pre-Reception, our Pre-Reception Nursery for our youngest children aged 2 – 3 years and the other for the Pre-Reception 3 – 4 year olds.  In this way, activities can be planned which not only target the age and stage of each child but also foster a love of learning which is carried throughout their years in education and beyond.  Secure outdoor learning areas allow the children to investigate and explore throughout the year.

Preparatory School
From the first day in St John’s Preparatory School at the age of 2, our pupils embark on a life-long journey of learning.  The aim is to inspire children from a very early age to develop both academically and as individuals. The approach is always to use positive motivation and the tailored programme of education for each child ensures that they can achieve their personal best.  From the start of their school life, our pupils are taught to behave in a polite manner showing respect for their peers, teachers and parents.  St John’s is a happy place, where children can learn; and more importantly, can enjoy their learning.  The atmosphere that this creates ensures that every pupil can flourish and grow.Throughout their time in Preparatory School they continually assess our pupils progress to ensure that they are developing to their full potential. Half-termly assessments for achievement and effort are provided to all the parents.

Senior School
Pupils at St John’s are challenged to do the very best they can and are exposed to a variety of experiences both in school and out. We strive to provide the very best for our pupils and aim to provide plentiful learning opportunities to bring each and every subject to lifeThe pupils have a weekly timetable, with five lessons each day. This ensures that they enjoy an evenly paced and productive schedule. Each day starts with a tutor group period, where the pupils catch up on all of the latest notices and key information that they will need for the day ahead of them. These periods also include the weekly whole school assembly and a quiet reading time which we call ERIC (Everybody Reads In Class – this emphasises the importance we place on reading). Form periods also provide the opportunity for our pupils to spend time with their tutors, who are on hand to offer support or guidance, whether academic or pastoral.

Things to note

Senior Extra-Curricular Clubs
Each morning, from 8am to 8:30am, we are pleased to operate a breakfast club which is based in our lunchroom.  A selection of breakfast items can be purchased if the pupils wish to do so.  There is no need to book in advance. In addition to our extra-curricular clubs, they also offer a homework club which runs every day.

Senior Sports
St John’s recognises the benefits of sports in both pupil’s physical and mental wellbeing and encourages all pupils to actively take part. Set within 8 acres of land St John’s School has the space to offer a wide variety of both indoor and outdoor sports to pupils.  A Sports Hall to the standard of Sports England is the centre of our Physical Education Department where Mrs Moreira, Head of PE, works with her team of PE/Games teachers.

Art, Craft and Design
Pupils are introduced to the use of sketchbooks and are encouraged to use them to record observations and gather resources to help stimulate and develop imaginative ideas throughout.Pupils are taught the visual language of art, craft and design through the promotion of skills, knowledge and understanding. Given the opportunity to work with a variety of materials using different tools and techniques. These may include paint, collage, sculpting and printmaking.

Drama
Drama is taught to all students beginning with Music and Movement in Kindergarten and progressing to GCSE level for those choosing it as an option in Lower 5 (Year 10).  Drama in education, whilst using acting techniques, does not aim to produce actors but to enable students to understand topics and issues through empathy.  It increases confidence and enables communication skills to develop. It is our aim that all our students be comfortable to stand in front of a group of people and present an idea, product or point of view.
