On 8th May 1862, The Ursuline sisters came from Belgium to found a school. They settled in “Old House” in Upton Lane in the village of Upton. By 28th May they had begun a school in Sun Row (now Green Street) for the Catholic children of the area. This was the beginning of what we now call St. Antony’s Catholic Primary School. So the school is over 150 years oldSt. Antony’s Catholic Primary School’s Key Aims: To further develop the effectiveness & competencies of all leaders & stakeholders. To sustain standards in English, particularly in Reading, through the use of Phonics, daily reading and comprehension focused on inference & deduction, use of GPS to analyse and unpick texts & use of drama with imaginative play for characterisation. To sustain standards in Maths through the use and application of reasoning skills, use of key vocabulary, focus on number work & practical activities with effective strategies. To continue to challenge all pupils including the more able & SEND via differentiated questioning and measured but heightened difficulty in all lessons -building resilience. To further embed formative assessment strategies via peer/self-marking & feedback. To further enhance the quality of the school’s overall provision & environment ensuring the curriculum is more inclusive, broad and balanced.
Curriculum
The general aim of the school is to recognise the individual qualities of each child and to develop them to his or her full potential. They help each child to foster an attitude of reverence and love for God and neighbour and to acquire the knowledge and skills relevant to our ever changing world. They offer a broad and balanced curriculum which endeavours to fulfil the requirements of the Education Acts for England. Numeracy and Literacy are taught daily. Religious Education is a core subject and timetabled accordingly. They follow the Diocesan programme for Sex Education based on a developmental approach including personal, health, social, moral and citizenship aspects. All subjects are taught in accordance with the National Curriculum guidelines and they adopt a mixture of single-subject teaching and topic approach. They have strong links with several secondary schools and outside agencies that provide staff with specialist skills in order to support and extend the children’s learning opportunities and development.
SEND
The Inclusion Team at St. Antony’s Catholic Primary provides support for pupils who for one reason or another are having difficulty accessing the curriculum. The EA's provide support in lessons for pupils having difficulties accessing the curriculum. Learning support teachers teach and monitor the progress of pupils on the Code of Practice. SEN teacher is qualified to assess and provide individualised programs for pupils with more severe literacy difficulties such as dyslexia. She is also able to assess pupils at the end of each key stage for extra support in exams. SEND Team organises and teaches small groups of pupils who require extra input bring them up to the level of their peers.

They are an academy school which means they are the own admission authority but to ensure continuity across the borough we follow the London Borough of Newham’s admissions processes. All applications for this school must be made through London Borough of Newham’s Pupil Services, not this school.All reception applications must be made through the family’s home local authority. For children living in Newham, families must apply via London Borough of Newham. For children living outside Newham, whose family wants them to attend this school their application must be made through their home borough naming this school as a preference on their application.
