Normanhurst School is Independent Secondary school in Selective for kids aged 2 to 16 (Gender - 2 to 16 )
Normanhurst is a small school with a big vision. It’s a school where pupils of all abilities, aptitudes and social backgrounds thrive and achieve. The community is based upon high expectations of learning and behaviour is underpinned by excellent pastoral care. It is an honour to lead Normanhurst School. The reasons are instantly apparent when you visit and observe school life. Pupils enjoy being part of this school; they want to achieve, aim high and work with endeavour and application.Normanhurst School sees every pupil as an individual with talents, and values the contribution of each one, whether it is in academic excellence, artistic flair, musical ability, sporting prowess or community spirit. Our aim is that every pupil appreciates their value both within the school and in the world beyond. We aim to provide our pupils with a thirst for knowledge and a curiosity for the wider world.
Early Years (Ages 2½ to 5)
The Early Years Foundation Stage at Normanhurst includes Lower Kindergarten, Upper Kindergarten and Reception. Children can begin school from 2½ years, and are able to attend on a part-time or full-time basis during the Kindergarten Years. School is full-time from the start of Reception Class. As our recent school inspection confirms, all children flourish in the Early Years. They have excellent relationships with staff and often exceed their expected levels of progress. Normanhurst provides a happy and secure environment to learn and our pupils really enjoy their time at school.
Infants (Ages 5 to 7)
In Years 1 and 2 children build on their Foundation Stage skills and follow an exciting and challenging curriculum in which most lessons are taught by the class teacher. These include English (literacy), Maths (numeracy), Humanities and Science. In addition there are specialist teachers for a number of subjects including French, ICT, PE, Music and Drama.Classes have up to around 16 pupils and there is a learning support assistant and a teacher in each class. The transition from Reception Class to Year 1 is an exciting time for children and the teachers work together closely to ensure a smooth passage.
Juniors (Ages 7 to 11)
As well as a strong focus on the academic subjects and a particular focus in English, Mathematics and Science, our pupils in Years 3 to 6 have a creative and rich curriculum with specialist teachers for Languages, Music, Drama, ICT and Art. We encourage our pupils to be innovative and inquisitive; we want them to be engaged as we believe this enables them to make the maximum progress possible.
Seniors (Ages 11 to 16)
Years 7 to 11 are our Seniors. Our one Year 6 class moves up to Year 7 and are joined by new pupils who join us from a variety of local independent and Junior schools. At this point we become two-form entry with around 15 pupils in each form. The classes are deliberately small to enable more personalised teaching and learning. Pupils of all abilities are able to make good progress and receive regular feedback with more individual attention and tailor-made targets for progression.
Breakfast and After School Club
They have a supervised Breakfast Club from 7.30am to 8.30am each day, and an After School Club until 6pm. These are for pupils from rising 3 (ie age 3 in the term starting the club) to Year 6 and are run by Normanhurst staff. Drinks, breakfast cereals and toast are provided every day. After School Club runs to 6pm and is staffed by the same team. Sandwiches and fruit are provided every day and homework can be completed in the quiet area. There are also many activities on offer.
Clubs and Activities
There are many chargeable and non-chargeable clubs that take place during and after school, which are of great benefit pupils of all ages. We aim to deliver 10 sessions per term and will always try to reschedule a session if the club/activity leader misses one.
