Norland Place School is Independent Primary school in Kensington and Chelsea for kids aged 4 to 11 (Gender - Mixed )

Founded in 1876 by Emily Lord, Norland Place School was originally sited at 9 Norland Place, now known as No.166 Holland Park Avenue. The school’s motto, ‘Follow the Light, Uphold the Right’ was introduced in 1894 by Miss Ada Tisdall, who succeeded Miss Lord as Headmistress.Children were taken to games by horse-drawn bus and the only school uniform was a dark blue hat band with a pale zigzag.  As the school grew, it moved into Nos.164, 166 and 168 Holland Park Avenue.By 1908, the first full school uniform was worn: a blue dress with noughts and crosses around the collar.  Puff sleeves and a light blue blouse completed the attire.

Features

Things to note

Music
Music is regarded as an essential part of every child’s education at Norland Place. The department plays a prominent role in the life of the school with each class receiving two music lessons a week from our Director of Music. Timetabled music is further enhanced through a wide range of choirs, orchestras and ensembles which are available to children across the school and which rehearse and perform regularly.

Drama
They recognise the many benefits that drama brings, principally to develop a child’s confidence and their interpersonal and performance skills. Drama lessons feature in every child’s timetable. Opportunities for performance start in the earliest days of a pupil’s Norland career taking the form of class assemblies in The Charter Hall and Pre-Prep Nativity production. These performances increase in scale and demand as children progress through the school, with full year group productions in Year 3 and Year 6 and a Prep musical staged every two years.

Ballet
A hugely popular part of life in Pre-Prep is our provision of ballet which is available to all children in Reception onwards. Our offering is provided by Chelsea Ballet Schools who teach preschool dance, classical ballet, modern dance and tap.In addition to Chelsea Ballet’s gifted teachers, almost all classes are accompanied by one of a professional pianist. Chelsea Ballet Schools has a strong Mission Statement that seeks to enhance the lives of children through dance.
