Monmouth School for Boys is Independent Secondary school for kids aged 3 to 11 (Gender - Boys )
Monmouth School for Boys was founded in 1614 by William Jones, a member of the Haberdashers’ Company of London. As they now prepare the pupils for the opportunities of the 21st Century they are proud of the unbroken history and Christian heritage. The generous bequest of William Jones has underpinned our development and enables us to keep our fees extremely competitive. They have a tradition of tremendous achievement, but are not held back by that tradition. Rather it gives the school the confidence to meet the challenges which all schools now face. Crucially, as an independent school, they are the master of the own destiny. Unlike many independent schools, however, we prosper considerably from the charitable support of the founder, William Jones, and the Haberdashers’ Company. This has two significant advantages: first our facilities are exceptional; second, the availability of our scholarships and bursaries scheme ensures that as many pupils as possible can benefit from the wide range of opportunities here. They prepare the boys to take their place among the nation’s elite, but they are not an elitist institution.
Academic
They place an emphasis on providing our pupils with the skills to learn for themselves, under the guidance of their teachers. As one of the UK’s leading private schools, they provide an inspirational education experience that ignites the spark in students who will be the highly-skilled workforce of the future. The curriculum, which is robust and exciting, is based on the National Curriculum but is not constrained by it. They introduce pupils to a wide range of subjects in their early years at the school and they usually go on to take nine or 10 subjects at GCSE.We are delighted to confirm that our students will not be affected by plans announced in October 2021 by the exam regulator, Qualifications Wales, to revamp Wales GCSEs. They recognise the importance of studying separate GCSES in Biology, Chemistry and Physics and appropriately preparing our students for their A levels and beyond. At Monmouth, we will continue to offer GCSEs in all three science subjects – Biology, Chemistry and Physics – and maintain a clear and separate identity for each. They will also not be affected by Qualifications Wales’ proposals to provide fewer GCSE exams for Modern Languages and Maths.
Co-curricular
Monmouth School for Boys offers a wide and varied range of activities that extend far beyond the scope of our formal academic programme. All the students are encouraged to take full advantage of lunchtime and after school activities and clubs. They develop confidence and make friends through chess, karate, reading, choir and many other activities.
Sport
Sport plays a central role in school life, both for boys who excel in the wide range of sports and for those who are less gifted but no less enthusiastic. Sport offers crucial lessons in the importance of co-operation and teamwork, and it is also a wonderful tool for building confidence. The staff include former county cricketers and rugby union internationals. The boys are provided with the best in coaching and are able to take full advantage both of our facilities and our exceptional location at the heart of the Wye Valley.
The Arts
With outstanding facilities and inspirational staff, our reputation for Drama, Music and Dance is second to none. Of course, they focus on performance, but they also encourage students of all ages and abilities to experience the joy of these disciplines. They own and run The Blake Theatre – a well-known professional venue and public space on our site which is fully equipped with state-of-the-art sound and lighting. The senior school productions, particularly the joint Haberdashers’ Monmouth Schools productions, are aimed at every pupil from Year 7 right through to Year 13.
