Katharine Lady Berkeley's School is a State Secondary school for kids aged 11 to 18 (Gender - Mixed)
Katharine Lady Berkeley’s School has a long history. In fact, it is the oldest state secondary school in the country, having been founded in 1384 when Katharine Lady Berkeley set up a school in Wotton-under-Edge, with one master and two students. Since then, the school has come a long way and is now a highly successful 11-18 mixed comprehensive school of over 1500 students. It’s important to them that you are ambitious for your future, enjoy coming to school and have a desire to be successful. The committed and skilled team will provide inspiring teaching, fantastic extra-curricular opportunities and great academic and pastoral support to help you become a well-rounded individual, to achieve your very best every day and to prepare you for an exciting future. They are extremely proud of the strong community. They are a welcoming, open and outward-looking school where every individual can feel safe and thrive. The academic standards are very important to them, but so too is the ethos of respect for all.
KLB School Curriculum Intent
At KLB they have a curriculum that is broad and balanced. The subject curricula are designed to make clear the most important knowledge for each subject, including subject specific skills. From Year 7 to Year 9 our curriculum follows the National Curriculum, enhanced by most students studying two languages through Key Stage 3. The options process for Key Stage 4 is designed to allow a wide combination of choices, whilst encouraging students to maintain their broad and balanced curriculum through continuing their study of both a language and a humanity at GCSE. The location of KLB means that they put significant emphasis on diversity as part of the cultural capital that they want the pupils to experience. Opportunities for diversity are embedded within the planned curriculum with focus on the variety and cultural richness of both the world and the country. As they believe that curriculum goes beyond the timetable, they offer an exciting range of sports, arts, trips and enrichment activities to all of the students. This is underpinned by the strong sense of community at KLB.
Sport at KLB
They have an extensive range of extra-curricular sports clubs for students to join. By joining one of the extra-curricular clubs students will be able to pursue their passions, raise their aspirations and develop their teamwork skills. They are very proud of our genuine reputation as one of the top schools in the region for both recreational and competitive sport. This is evident by looking through the comprehensive team honours list over the past few years, as well as the well followed social media feeds. Students at KLB really embrace an extensive range of sporting opportunities, led by the dedicated and enthusiastic staff. Participation is the priority, but they also take great pride in the outstanding achievements of many of the individual students and our teams, frequently gaining success at county, regional and national levels.
