Description

Learning Opportunities Centre Secondary is Independent Secondary school in Not applicable for kids aged 10 to 19 (Gender - 10 to 19 )

Learning Opportunities is a small independent specialist school for students with a wide range of additional needs, including social, emotional and mental health difficulties (SEMH), autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and moderate learning difficulties. They are registered to provide education for 36 students with Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCP’s), aged 10 to 16 years of age (School Years 6-11).All students have, for a variety of reasons, found it difficult to achieve their full potential in other settings. Often their schooling will have been chaotic and fragmented, resulting in them falling behind their peers academically, and as a result they relish the chance to succeed in our smaller and more personal setting. At Learning Opportunities they pride ourselves in managing the wide ranging social, emotional, behavioural and educational needs of all our students, where they are supported within a consistent, caring and supportive environment. The dedicated staff team, who have a range of expertise, are passionate about providing the best possible opportunities and outcomes for all of the students. Highly personalised programmes support students to develop the self-confidence to deal with the significant life changes and challenges they may encounter, and to become positive members of the school and wider community.

KEY STAGE 3
As with the primary curriculum, developing students’ communication, social and emotional skills remains an important aspect of the differentiated curriculum.Lessons are general taught by subject teachers; teaching styles are varied and encompass a mixture of whole class, group and individual teaching. The exact balance between these depends upon the needs of the class and the individual. Interactive learning is highly valued and incorporated throughout.Planning ensures breadth and progression to ensure students are taught the skills they will need to live a full and interesting life, as independently as they are able.

KEY STAGE 4
In Key Stage 4 all students follow an individual programme designed to meet their specific needs, abilities, and post 16 preferences. This includes preparation for the transition to a Post 16 placement either with us, at college, a training provider or employment. They can access a variety of accredited courses including GCSE, Entry Level and Functional Skills.Students begin to look at the world of work and training through college links, work experience and Enterprise Education. Emphasis is placed on developing greater independence.

Features

Things to note

A key feature of what they do is teaching our students to take responsibility for their behaviour and its consequences. We work in partnership with parents, carers and other agencies to help students make positive choices and changes, which will serve them better in their future life. Many of the visitors comment on the positive ethos of the school – calm, focused and happy, where appropriate and positive relationships between staff and students are clearly evident.
