Fairfield School is Independent Primary school in North Somerset for kids aged 2 to 11 (Gender - Mixed )
The school is a member of the Independent Schools’ Association (ISA) and was last inspected by the Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI) in November 2019. ISI accreditation indicates that the quality of the school is regularly monitored and assessed. A summary of the ISI report is available on this website. They aim to provide a broad, liberal education closely informed by the New National Curriculum 2014 and based on Christian principles. They encourage each child to maximise his or her potential and they aim to fully develop each child's individual aptitudes. They do this through creating a family ethos in which children feel happy, secure and valued. In this way, they learn to be part of a community, appreciating and understanding their own and others’ needs and strengths.
EARLY YEARS FOUNDATION STAGE
Lambs Nursery and Pre-School are an integral part of the whole school and, when Pre-School is oversubscribed, priority is given to pupils intending to transfer to the main school. Children in Lambs Nursery, Pre-School and Reception follow the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum, based on the seven areas of learning: Personal, Social and Emotional Development, Communication and Language, Literacy, Mathematical Development, Understanding of the World, Physical Development and Expressive Arts and Design.
INFANTS / KEY STAGE 1
Children move into the Infant Department (Key Stage 1) at the end of their Reception year and spend a year in Year 1 (aged 5 turning 6) and a year in Year 2 (aged 6 turning 7) before moving on to the Junior Department (Key Stage 2).The Reading Buddy system continues throughout the school and the children forge strong friendships across year groups, which are further enhanced by the House system. We have 3 Houses: Brunel, Cabot and Hannah More—and all children are allocated a House when they start in Nursery. Competitions take place throughout the year, including Sports Day in the summer term.
JUNIORS / KEY STAGE 2
Children spend 4 years in our junior department (KS2), moving through Year 3 (aged 7 turning 8), Year 4 (aged 8 turning 9), Year 5 (aged 9 turning 10) and Year 6 (aged 10 turning 11).Cross-curricular links and breadth of curriculum are very strong features of our curriculum, which is approached through whole school themes; these are carefully rotated to avoid repetition. Some whole school themes have been: Let's Remember 1900-1930 (including the nation’s focus on the centenary of the outbreak and end of the First World War), Ice and Fire, Britain as a Maritime Nation. The curriculum is further enhanced by an extensive programme of trips and visiting speakers.Sport is taught by specialist teachers. Swimming is a weekly activity and there is an extremely wide choice of extra-curricular activities after school, from Lego to cookery, rugby to songwriting.
MUSIC
Music forms an integral part of our curriculum and is usually linked to our whole school themed approach to the curriculum. Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) and our Infant Department perform separate Nativity plays, complete with songs and dances. The children in EYFS perform again in the summer term.
DRAMA
Drama and music play a big part in our Family Assemblies which are presented by each class on Fridays throughout the year. Our Nursery and Reception classes perform a Nativity play, as do our infant (Years 1 and 2) classes. Years 3, 4 and 5 perform a drama production in the spring term each year. Year 6 currently stage a Shakespeare production each summer term, for which the children compose their own music.
SPORTS
The school achieves much success in local sporting events. Regular sports fixtures take place with other schools. Swimming takes place weekly at the local pool for all children from Reception to Year 6. The pupils take part in many local sporting events, such as sports fixtures against local maintained and independent schools and ISA regional sporting events. Some pupils have represented the South West Area in sport. These activities provide supportive links with the local community, which benefit the pupils.
