Ermysted's Grammar School

Gargrave, Skipton BD23, United Kingdom
11-18 Years

Description

Ermysted's Grammar School is leading State Secondary school in Skipton. This is a Selective school for kids age 11 to 18 years. Gender - Boys

Ermysted’s is one of England’s oldest schools and for over 525 years the School has sought to provide a first class education to the boys of Skipton and the surrounding areas, regardless of their background. Much has changed since its foundation in the fifteenth century, but the school has never wavered from its original aim to provide an exciting and challenging environment in which to develop ‘learned and wise men’. Academic success is important but so is the development of character, resilience and self-confidence. At Ermysted’s we take the development of the whole child very seriously. The school prides itself on its nurturing and inclusive community, and we work hard to create an environment where every boy feels valued and supported to achieve their very best.

Facilities

KS3
Pupils in Years 7 are placed into four forms of mixed ability. To develop social bonds within the new intake, pupils are taught in form groups in Year 7. All KS3 pupils follow the same extensive programme of study in mathematics, English, biology, chemistry, computing, Latin, French, food and nutrition, German, art and design, history, geography, design technology, music, religious studies, physics, PSHCE, and physical education; thereby, going far beyond the statutory National Curriculum.

KS4
Classes are set by ability in mathematics from Year 10 but are mixed ability everywhere else. Pupils change form groups at the start of Year 10 when a fifth tutor group is introduced to the pastoral structure. All pupils follow a compulsory programme of GCSEs in mathematics, English language, English literature, biology, chemistry, and physics. All pupils select a further four optional GCSE subjects, which must include a language (French, German, or Latin) and a humanities subject (geography or history).

KS5
On entry, students select three subjects to follow at A-Level; for students with sufficiently high prior attainment at GCSE, a fourth A-Level subject can be added. All pupils can add the Extended Project Qualification to their A Level programme. The range of A Level courses on offer varies each year, but typically students select from a list that includes art and design, biology, chemistry, classical civilisation, computer science, design engineering, economics, English language, English literature, French, further mathematics, geography, German, politics, product design, history, Latin, mathematics, music, physical education, physics, and philosophy and ethics. Some of these courses are run in collaboration with Skipton Girls’ High School.

Sixth Form
Ermysted’s Sixth Form is a happy, hard-working community of 16-18 year-olds united by a desire to succeed. We’re small enough to be friendly and caring, yet large enough to offer an interesting range of subjects. Reading about it on a website can only communicate so much; a visit is far more useful. Prospective students can either attend our annual Taster Day in January, or arrange a tour mid-week.

Things to note

Extracurricular Programme
It gives me great pleasure to commend to you the many and varied programme of extracurricular activities offered at Ermysted’s Grammar School. There is so much more to the education of our pupils than simply what happens in the classroom. Pupils are encouraged to become involved in the wider life of the School, and to take part in the many activities which are run before school, at lunchtimes, and after school as part of a vibrant enrichment programme.
