Facilities

Kindergarten One
Kindergarten One is the pre-reception class that welcomes your child to the Branwood family. Here your child will be introduced to a more formal learning environment, focusing around play based learning. Our staff members in KG1 recognise that the transition from home or day nursery to a formal school environment can be a little daunting for both child and parent. Here at Branwood we recognise that every child will adjust differently and we work hard to ensure that the move is an exciting and positive experience.

Kindergarten Two
Kindergarten Two welcomes your child into the infant department at Branwood. Here your child will continue on their academic journey, building upon the structure and curriculum introduced in KG1. Children enter KG2 with a great deal more confidence, having become accustomed to the routine of the school day from the previous academic year.

Form One
Form One is a challenging but very exciting year for the children. Learning becomes more formal and children are encouraged to become independent and motivated learners. They are taught in a visually stimulating environment with a range of displays showing off their hard work. Every child is unique and both learning and planning in Form One reflects this. The classroom is full of happy and enthusiastic children.

Form Two
The staff members in Form Two work tirelessly to ensure that the whole class thoroughly enjoys their learning and to ensure that they make a tremendous amount of progress. The children develop enormously both socially and academically through the course of the academic year. As they progress through their final year of the infant department, they take on more responsibility for their own learning journey and gradually learn to work much more independently.

Form Three
During this year, National Curriculum subjects such as Science, History, Geography, ICT, Art, Spanish, RE and PSHCE are covered in depth. However, priority is given to Mathematics and Literacy. The three areas covered in Mathematics are mechanical, mental and problems, and the four areas in Literacy are grammar, comprehension, creative writing and spellings. The children’s reading is also listened to on a daily basis and they achieve a reading and spelling age much higher than their chronological age.

Form Four
Form Four is an exciting year in a child’s development, both academically and socially. Over the course of the year, the children learn to take a mature responsibility for their actions as they grow into caring young ladies and gentlemen. The children learn to maintain and develop meaningful friendships with not only their peers but also children of different ages and adults alike. They learn to consider the feelings and emotions of themselves and others through mature conversations and interactive activities.

Form Five
Form 5 is the final teaching year before the examination preparation for the Independent School examinations which are taken in Form 6. Accordingly, the emphasis is very much on Mathematics, English and Verbal and Non-verbal reasoning, as these are the core subjects for the external examinations.

Form Six
Form 6 is the year in which the children sit their entrance examinations to the Senior Independent Schools which form part of the Manchester Consortium of Independent Schools, as well as the Trafford 11+ examinations. This is the culmination of the children’s time at Branwood, when the rewards for all their hard work and effort come to fruition. The September term begins with the children starting the process of final revision, including the polishing of methods and techniques and the rigorous practising of past examination papers.

Selection Criteria: Selective

Admission Details

Entry may be considered at any appropriate age and application should be made to the bursar in the first instance. An appointment can be made for the parents of prospective pupils to visit the school, talk with the headmaster, discuss their children’s educational needs and objectives, ask any questions they may have and register their child for entry. Early registration for entry at age three is essential as there is a heavy demand for places at this stage. Academic ability and potential are the criteria for later entry and an assessment appropriate to the age of the potential entrant is made on application. A regularly revised and updated waiting list is maintained to facilitate entry for suitable pupils for whom a place is not immediately available. The programme for Early Years and Foundation Stage (EYFS) of a child’s initial schooling is an area which has recently, and still is, receiving a great deal of consideration and research. Parents of children in this age group should feel free to ask staff concerned about developments and current thinking in this important sector of educational grounding.
