Beech Lodge School is Independent Secondary school in Not applicable for kids aged 7 to 18 (Gender - 7 to 18 )
Beech Lodge is a small specialist school for children aged 7 to 18 who require a supportive and nurturing learning environment to reach their potential. At Beech Lodge they provide a specialist education for children who have social & emotional difficulties such as anxiety and school refusal due to developmental trauma and adverse childhood experiences, as well as communication and learning differences. Children come to them often feeling confused and misunderstood, with low self-esteem and disengaged from schooling. They give them an education that is tailored to their individual needs, enabling and empowering them to understand that ‘great minds think differently’, to gain confidence in themselves and progress their learning.
Curriculum
The curriculum offers pupils a thorough, fun and practical vehicle through which they develop a joy of learning and a sense of achievement and pride. To achieve this, it is essential to make use of the child’s innate skills and talents and take account of the unique nature of every student. They work with each child’s strengths, interests and experiences in order to develop their self-confidence, their ability for self-exploration and their effectiveness at collaborative working. The fundamental aim is to help each child to think independently, to be able to read between the lines, to question, to enquire, to see the bigger picture and to make connections with their own lives and the wider world. The curriculum is taught in an active rather than passive fashion, using the outdoor environment, cookery, music and discussion to bring the subjects to life and make them meaningful to the individual’s wider existence and their future. The delivery focuses on all subjects being skills-based to equip students with life long expertise that will stay with them into adulthood.
Childhood Trauma Workshops
In the past we have held Childhood Trauma Workshops for education professionals hosted at the school. Delivered by Head Lucy Barnes, Educational Psychologist and co-author of Fagus Alastair Lidster and Proprietor Daniela Shanly, the course covered an introduction to Childhood Trauma and Adverse Childhood Experiences through to working with these children in the school setting. The workshops were very well received and generated much interest.
Therapy
Most of the pupils who come to Beech Lodge require additional therapeutic support at school for a variety of reasons. They may require help to make sense of early life experiences, techniques to manage emotional regulation and anxiety or just someone else to talk to when things are tough.Overseen by our Senior Leadership Team and Educational Psychologist, our in-house therapies include Speech and Language therapy, Occupational Therapy, Clinical Psychology and Dyadic Developmental Psychology (DDP).
