Description

Herries Preparatory School is Independent Primary school in Windsor and Maidenhead for kids aged 3 to 11 (Gender - Mixed )

Herries is a delightful popular non-selective preparatory school in Berkshire for children from rising 3 to 11 years old. We are noted for our warm and nurturing culture, which was established in 1937 for children whose parents were working in the colonies. Today, many of our parents value the flexibility of our extended day which begins with breakfast at 7:30 am and continues with tea to 6 pm.  The ethos involves developing the whole child as a rounded individual by means of our broad educational provision. Character education and our wide-ranging curriculum focus on public speaking, drama, music, art, sports and numerous extra-curricular activities and clubs. Our supportive family atmosphere enables pupils to thrive and achieve their full potential. The high standards of pastoral care encourage the development of life skills such as confidence and resilience. Manners, personal responsibility, tolerance and respect are nurtured at Herries. Our pupils benefit from smaller class sizes allowing more individual attention and learning time.

Facilities

Nursery
The Nursery occupies a large suite of rooms with plenty of space to play, dress up, be creative and explore. There is also a garden and covered area where the curriculum can be extended outdoors.  We take advantage of the National Trust land that surrounds the school with delightful nature walks and trips to our local woods for our flourishing Woodland School.

Early Years
At Herries the Early Years Foundation Stage provides solid foundations for children from two-years to the age of five. Children entering the Foundation Stage are offered the best possible start to their education in a happy, calm and loving atmosphere. They know that children develop quickly in the early years and the experiences we give our children at Herries have a major impact on their future life chances.

Pre Prep
In pre prep, schemes of work follow the National Curriculum though our aim is to teach beyond the levels set for each age group. In Literacy, words underpin everything we do and pupils are taught to express themselves confidently both orally and in writing. Lively texts and stories, backed up with imaginative teaching methods, give the children the confidence to be creative while at the same time broadening and developing their comprehension skills. Regular and systematic groundwork with sounds and sentence-building gives the children practice in all the skills

Prep
From Years 3 to 6, children continue to have a form teacher but are taught by specialist subject teachers. Herries pupils work in an atmosphere that encourages achievement in the classroom and beyond. Our aim is to develop the ability to work independently and to this end we set regular homework tasks, appropriate to the age of the child and their abilities and interests. The core subjects of English and Mathematics are taught on a daily basis and Science twice weekly. In small classes, the children have weekly sessions of French, Geography, History and Religious Education, PSHEE, Music, Art, Design Technology and ICT, PE and Sport.

Features

Things to note

Art and Design
They at Herries believe a high-quality art and design education should engage, inspire and challenge pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design. As pupils progress, they should be able to think critically and develop a more rigorous understanding of art and design. They should also appreciate how art and design both reflect and shape our history, and contribute to the culture and creativity we are so lucky to have. We focus on creating independent thinking, self-motivated artists and designers.

Drama
The dramatic arts are central to life at Herries and we are firm believers in the importance of Drama on the school curriculum and beyond. The drama classes provide pupils with an outlet for emotions, thoughts and creativity that they might not otherwise have ways to express. Through taking on another role pupils can experiment with personal choices and solutions through problems faced by characters in literature or historical figures.

Music
Music is a very important part of the curriculum at Herries; each class, including Nursery, has a weekly music lesson with a music specialist. The music room is equipped with a wide range of instruments and equipment including keyboards and percussion instruments. The curriculum is designed for continuity and progression. They believe that every child should be encouraged to enjoy and appreciate all aspects of music through performing, composing and listening. It should be a creative and enjoyable activity and we provide opportunities for all children to compose, perform and appraise music, to develop the skills to appreciate a wide variety of music. Practical activities

After School Clubs
After the school academic day finishes there is an opportunity for pupils from Reception to Year 6 to join an after school activity.  It’s a great chance for our pupils to take part in something new, or something that complements the academic and sporting curriculum in a safe, familiar environment.
