  • Explore the ruins: Hidden in the deep River Rye valley, the beautiful and tranquil ruins of Rievaulx Abbey reflect nearly 1,000 years of spiritual, commercial and Romantic history. Rievaulx was one of the first Cistercian abbeys to be founded in England in around 1130. After the dissolution, it became the centre of commercial activity. The abbey forge was used to set up an ironworks on the site.

Rievaulx Abbey and The Feast of St Aelred: Date: Tue 3 Mar. Time: 10.30am - 12pm. Location: Rievaulx Abbey. Join English Heritage historian Dr Micheal Carter at Rievaulx Abbey on the anniversary of the abbey's foundation in 1132 to hear about St Aelred the monastery's other saints. Learn about St Aelred's extraordinary life and how he left his imprint on the abbeys buildings. Hear tales of other saints accociated with the monastery and prepare yourself for stories of miraculous cures and visions.
