Features

  • Our Railways: Bressingham is a great day out for everyone who loves railways. We have three narrow gauge passenger railways, along with a standard gauge demonstration railway, with journeys over three miles of track. What better way to explore the beautiful gardens, grounds and countryside of Bressingham than by climbing aboard a fabulous steam engine. With more than three miles of narrow-gauge steam lines and four different railway journeys to choose from, it's the perfect way to relax and enjoy the scenery.
  • Our Gardens: Bressingham's four linking gardens cover 17 acres and are renowned for their horticultural excellence. Enjoy a leisurely stroll around this peaceful natural haven, or better still, see them from one of our fabulous steam engines. Originally created on grazing farmland to display the Blooms of Bressingham Nursery perennial plants, the gardens today feature thousands of species and varieties of plants in a series of linked gardens, providing endless inspirational ideas throughout the year.
  • Our Museum: Walk into our exhibition hall and be transported back to the 1940s, with a full-size street scene, Dad's Army displays, vintage vehicles, traction engines, living vans and even an Anderson shelter. The museum is also home to a full size Travelling Post Office (TPO), so climb aboard and see if you can match the speedy sorting skills of postal workers!
  • The Bressingham Collection: Step back in time by taking a trip on one of our four railways, with routes through the gardens, woodland and fen, or climb aboard our beautiful Victorian gallopers. A visit to the locomotive sheds shows the power of mighty steam engineering in all its glory. See historic locomotives, the refinement of royal carriages and stationary engines in action.
  • Victorian Gallopers: Come and see Victorian engineering and showmanship at its very best. Step aboard our beautiful gallopers and experience the joy of yesteryear - they’re guaranteed to bring a smile to the faces of the young, and the young at heart. The brightly decorated three-abreast gallopers take centre stage here at Bressingham and rightly so, as one of the finest examples that can be seen anywhere. They operate every day during the main season, and the nostalgic music which accompanies the ride can be heard right around the site.

Facilities

  • Parking: All parking on site is free for cars, coaches, and motorhomes, but please note there is strictly no overnight parking at the museum.
  • Food & Drinks: With a fresh new look and a tasty menu you'll find lots of delicious options at Carriages, the museum's cafe. Take a seat right next door to the magnificent gallopers, where Carriages has plenty of space inside and outside, thanks to a covered terrace.

What to see

Our Railways

  • The Fen Railway: The Fen Railway runs along a one-and-a-half mile track through the countryside and fenland around Bressingham's site. Previously called The Nursery Railway, this line was built in the 1960s and got its name as it travelled through a large horticultural nursery owned and run by Bressingham's founder Alan Bloom. Unfortunately the nursery closed in 2011 and so we renamed the line The Fen Railway, reflecting the view passengers see from the train.
  • The Garden Railway: This 10¼" gauge railway is the smallest gauge railway at the museum. Designed and built by Bressingham's own engineering team, the line's locomotive is named Alan Bloom - in recognition of the museum's founder - and pulls up to to three carriages. The locomotive was modelled on the Hunslet Engine company's Quarry design with modifications to suit The Garden Railway.
  • The Waveney Valley Railway: Trains on the 15" gauge Waveney Valley Railway leave Lakeside Station travelling east and through the Waveney Valley. It's a popular trip with our visitors, as in the middle of the journey the Waveney Valley and Fen Railways cross over, and passengers wave to each other before heading off in different directions. The line runs through banks of mature rhododendrons towards the end of the journey just before it meets the the Standard Gauge railway. On days when the Standard Gauge Railway is running, both trains race each other back to the station.
  • The Standard Gauge Railway: The Standard Gauge Railway operates during special events and occasions on a quarter-of-a-mile demonstration line, some of which runs parallel with The Waveney Valley Railway.
