Welcome to the new Wimbledon College website. They hope that it will enable you to gain an insight into the life and spirit of the College, the values that underpin our community and all that the school has to offer your son. Wimbledon College has a strong tradition as a Jesuit School. At the heart of the Jesuit tradition is the insight of St Ignatius of Loyola that God is to be found in all things. This belief means that Wimbledon College, along with Jesuit schools worldwide, aims to: create a caring and disciplined community in which pupils will feel secure and are motivated to be involved in their studies and in a wide range of school activities. encourage pupils to recognise the best in themselves and to work hard to develop all of their talents, instill in its pupils an awareness of the needs of others and a commitment to putting their gifts and energies at the service of others.
Curriculum Intent
The curriculum, rooted in the vision statement and the key principles of Jesuit education, provides aspirational pathways for all pupils to enable them to strive for excellence in all that they do so that they can achieve their potential and progress on their career pathway. All pupils engage with a broad, balanced and sequenced curriculum and are supported to develop their knowledge and understanding of concepts, skills and talents. They also have access to an extensive range of extra-curricular activities which provides both a balance to their academic studies and enriching cultural capital opportunities. We are committed to care for the individual pupil and their development as a whole person and help them to grow the personal characteristics and virtues within the Jesuit Pupil Profile. Being ‘men and women for others’ means that each pupil has the desire and capacity to make a positive difference in the lives of those they meet now as pupils and in their future lives.
Special Educational Needs
Every boy in the school has a different personality, different background and different needs. Some will have significant additional needs. These arise from physical disability or medical condition, emotional and behavioural issues, not having English as their first language, or learning needs. A strong Special Needs Department, with 4 teachers and some 28 support staff, provides specialist teaching and care for these pupils within the department and out in the school at large. The aim is to balance withdrawal from mainstream lessons with the goal of integrating pupils with additional needs into the normal life of the school. Pupils who enter the school with reading and numeracy levels significantly below those required to access the secondary curriculum are provided with focused catch-up classes in Figures (Year 7).
Extra Curricular Activities
The College places great emphasis on extra curricular involvement for all boys. These complement the curriculum and offer boys the opportunity of learning and developing in different ways. All boys are encouraged to participate in at least two activities and most do so. By getting involved in activities beyond the classroom, boys participate in the life of the school and have ownership of their school. This supports their studies and, time and again, we see that those who are most involved in the extra-curricular programme are those who do best in their studies.
