Description

Willington School is Independent Primary school in Merton for kids aged 3 to 11 (Gender - Mixed )

Based in the heart of Wimbledon, Willington Prep offers an education for life for girls and boys aged 3 to 11. It is an exciting time to be at Willington as they move, after 135 years of being an all boys school, to become a fully co-educational school. Welcoming girls into this fantastic learning community makes Willington a truly family friendly school. Offering a high quality education to all, where pupils are self-confident and happy, we instil the values of kindness, humility, respect and honesty in all that we do. Our quietly confident Year 6 pupils go on to a vast range of destination schools, many with scholarships from academic and sport through to music and art. A broad curriculum and rich co-curricular programme is offered from Nursery onwards, led by passionate, supportive teachers, who hold true to the school's motto, non scholae sed vitae discimus - we do not learn for school, but for life.

Facilities

The Nursery
The Willington Prep Nursery, Wimbledon, for girls and boys aged 3+,  is the start of a dedicated two year programme, completed in our Reception class, which follows the Early Years curriculum. The Nursery education encourages creativity, independence and imagination as the children learn through play and enjoy a free-flow environment with outdoor learning and activities. There is an effective balance between child led and adult led activities throughout the seven areas of learning. The curriculum is topic based and changes half termly. Topics are dependent on the time of year and children's interests. The children's developmental progress is regularly tracked and monitored via a profiling system indicating areas of focus for the future.

Reception
There are 7 areas of learning identified by the EYFS divided into 3 prime areas and 4 specific areas. The prime areas are crucial for igniting children’s curiosity and passion for learning, and for building an inquisitive mind, forming positive relationships and most all, thriving in education.

The Pre-Prep
The KS1 curriculum is dynamic and stimulating with teachers planning exciting and engaging lessons. Subjects taught by class teachers: Literacy (Reading, Writing, Handwriting, Speaking and Listening, Spelling and Phonics), Mathematics (consolidated by Doodle Maths on the iPads), Science, History, Geography, Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education, Religious Education

The Prep
The core subjects of English and Maths naturally are given the greatest time allocation in the Prep School, however, achieving Willington’s vision of developing well-rounded girls and boys is largely due to the broad and balanced curriculum.Every pupil will receive lessons in the following subjects by their class teacher (in years 3 and 4) and by specialist teachers in Years 5 and 6: English, Maths, Science, History, Geography, Religious Studies, Classics, Drama

Features

Things to note

Art & Design Technology
The Art and Design Technology Department at Willington School allows the pupils to explore different techniques, styles and methods of approach. They make use of individual work, experimentation and exploration of the various elements of the visual, tactile and sensory language of art, craft and design. The children experience a wide range of artwork and materials through a curriculum designed to stimulate their imagination and creativity.  Techniques explored include drawing, painting, printing, sculpting, textiles and mixed media in Art and a range of design challenges with a wide range of tools and materials in Design and Technology.

Music
In the Music Department we provide a wide range of musical opportunities, both curricular and extra-curricular, for every pupil in the school. The overriding ethos is to be inclusive and make music accessible to all, whilst offering challenges to our gifted musicians. Studying a wide range of musical styles offers plenty of opportunity for the three tenets of Music Education: composing, performing and listening to/appraising music. Focus on developing instrumental and vocal skills, music literacy and vocabulary, and confidence is essential. Trips, concerts and school performances are also an important part of the curriculum providing occasions for pupils to experience and appreciate live music.

Drama
Drama at Willington allows the children to express themselves in a creative and collaborative way, through movement and interaction with others. The subject promotes imagination and multi-sensory learning and develops essential life-long skills such as creativity, enquiry, communication, empathy, self confidence, cooperation, leadership and negotiation. Above all, we aim to make Drama fun and an enjoyable, memorable learning experience for our pupils.

Clubs
All pupils from Nursery to Year 6 are encouraged to take part in our co-curricular activities.  Many of these clubs are run by Willington staff and are free of charge.  Clubs may run in the morning, at lunchtime and after school and new clubs are regularly added.

Sport
They use PE to expose the pupils to a wide and varied array of sports. Throughout the year, they will practice throwing and catching accuracy, handball, dodgeball, gymnastics, climbing wall, futsal, hockey, rugby and cricket skills and tennis. Our varied programme allows our pupils to experience a wide variety of sports, which, in turn, with our curriculum sports, builds a holistically well-rounded and adaptable sportsmen/women.
