Description

West Lodge School is Independent Primary school in Bexley for kids aged 3 to 11 (Gender - Mixed )

It is the duty to ensure your child fulfils their academic potential, which they will do, but they believe it is the role to bring out the very best in the children. They want to prepare them for the world beyond West Lodge where the ability to lead a happy life is as important as being a high achiever academically. We want our children to have fun learning whilst developing a lifelong love of education.Academically it is our mission to inspire your child to explore and to use their imagination, to ask questions and to draw their own conclusions. Central to this ethos is having the confidence to take risks and never be afraid of making mistakes.

Learning and Teaching Years 3-6
In Years 3-6 the curriculum is broad but balanced. Maths and English are naturally the key subjects and great emphasis is placed upon developing strong foundations in the key concepts and skills so that children are then able to independently use and apply their knowledge. Through our text based approach for teaching English, which promotes reading, the children become confident readers and writers and embrace opportunities to be challenged creatively. Following its introduction in Years 1 and 2, Verbal and Non Verbal Reasoning are taught in preparation for entrance exams to grammar and other selective schools which are taken in Year 6.The children also benefit from specialist teaching in Music, Computing, French and Spanish, Food Technology and Sport. This increases in Years 5 and 6 with the Head Teacher delivering Humanities lessons and Art and Science being delivered by specialists.

Learning and teaching – Nursery, Reception and Years 1 and 2
The curriculum has key skills in literacy and numeracy at its core, with daily lessons in each. Maths and literacy skills are introduced with fun, exciting and interactive methods. Early reading skills are developed through the use of our phonics scheme and language development is the focus for all aspects of learning. This is enhanced by exciting child-centred topics and discrete subjects that encompass Science, Humanities, Art and Design and Sport (including the seven areas of learning in EYFS). From the onset children are encouraged to have ownership of their learning and to share ideas and skills with each other. The priority is, however, to always ensure learning is fun and exciting.

SEND & More Able
West Lodge is an inclusive school and we recognise that all of our children have differing talents and abilities. The teachers are skilled at differentiating their teaching and use a range of teaching styles to meet the needs of all of our children. Alongside teacher judgements, we track the children closely using twice yearly standardised tests and our own bespoke tracking system throughout the year to monitor the children’s progress against key objectives for each year group.Progress for all is our key focus. This is closely monitored for every child and is central to everything we do.

Things to note

Sport
Sport at West Lodge is about enjoying being active, developing a healthy spirit of competition and having fun. PE is taught by our specialist PE teacher from Nursery to Year 6 and we cover all areas of the National Curriculum. Whilst skill development is a focus for all lessons, developing a love of being active, fostering teamwork and having a healthy spirit of competition are the priorities for all children. From Nursery to Year 2 the children have two PE lessons a week covering gymnastics, dance, ball skills and team games with swimming introduced from Year 1. Whilst key skills are taught in preparation for the traditional summer and winter sports, the emphasis is always upon enjoyment and fostering a lifelong love of being active. This includes the introduction of inter-school festivals in a range of sports.

Music
At West Lodge, Music is an integral part of the ethos of the school which is that of promoting confidence and encouraging creativity. Each year group is given two class music lessons a week. The focus of Foundation Music is developing vocal and rhythm skills with a heavy dose of fun. Moving to Key Stage One, the children continue to sing a great deal and also to explore Classical Music and therefore develop their listening skills. The ukulele as a class lesson is introduced in Key Stage Two and the lessons are generally more formal with the children learning about the structure of music. The vocal content of the lessons progresses to part singing culminating in three of four parts by the end of Year 6. Composition and Music Technology are introduced.

Clubs
The school has a comprehensive program of clubs covering a wide range of activities. The majority of these clubs which run either before or after school are delivered by school staff, although several are run by external specialists. In providing a wide range of activities our hope is that every child will have the option of attending clubs which they will enjoy. Clubs do change on a termly basis but please click on the link below to gain an idea of the activities we offer.

Admission Details

The Nursery at West Lodge is very much part of the school and is therefore the starting point for the children’s journey with us. Children join Nursery in the September following their third birthday and when it is considered that they are able to cope with the more formal requirements of school. Nursery children may attend weekly for any number of sessions between five (the minimum) or ten (the maximum). Parents may review their preference and increase the number of sessions.
