Torquay Girls' Grammar School
0.20 miles
Torquay Boys' Grammar School is leading State Secondary school in Torquay. This is a Selective school for kids age 11 to 18 years. Gender - Boys
The school has a very proud history and can trace its roots back to 1904 and the establishment of the Pupil Teacher Centre in Abbey Road. Even in those days overcrowding was a problem and Torquay Secondary School, as it had become, was opened in Barton Road in April 1915 with 170 boys. They remained at Barton Road until 1983 when we moved to our purpose built site here at Shiphay. At that time we had 750 boys in four Houses; now we have 1120 boys and girls in six houses (girls studying the International Baccalaureate are part of our sixth form) so extensive building programmes have taken place in the last 30 years or so to keep our facilities up-to-date and to provide a suitable environment for learning of the highest quality to take place.
Key Stage 3
During Key Stage 3 (years 7, 8 & 9) students at TBGS study a broad and balanced curriculum comprising the following subjects: art and design, computing, design and technology, English, geography, history, mathematics, modern foreign languages, music and physical education. Personal, social & health education, citizenship, careers education, sex education and religious education are taught in Years 7, 8 and 9 in philosophy and applied ethics lessons; where necessary, occasional enrichment days supplement these lessons.
Key Stage 4
For Key Stage 4 (years 10 & 11) the core subjects studied by all students are: English language and literature, mathematics, a modern foreign language, science (students will either study physics, chemistry and biology as 3 separate GCSEs or a combined science course which incorporates these three sciences within a qualification equivalent to 2 GCSEs), religious education, personal & social education (including citizenship) and physical education.
Key Stage 5
TBGS Sixth Form (years 12 & 13), offers both the A-Level Curriculum and the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma. On the A-level route, students choose 3 or 4 A Levels, with up to five one-hour periods per subject, alongside one or more options to complement their studies, including Extended Essay, AS Further Mathematics, GOLD Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, AS Ancient History, and AS Music.
Sixth Form
Torquay Boys’ Grammar School Sixth Form is a high achieving establishment, offering a broad, balanced curriculum and extensive extracurricular opportunities in sport, music, the performing arts, languages and many other disciplines. They offer both A Levels and the International Baccalaureate at KS5 and are open to applications from female students as well as male for the IB. Close to 100% of our cohort will progress to university and we therefore have a strong emphasis on preparing students for higher education. Each year, around 75% of our students attend Top 30 UK universities and around 85% achieve a place at their first choice establishment.
Extra-Curricular Opportunities and Curriculum Support
The extra-curricular life of the school is of pivotal importance in fulfilling our wider educational aims. There are numerous clubs and societies catering for a wide range of interests and ages, both to extend students, and crossover with the extensive curriculum support available; every department offers support to all students as needed, but this Clubs and Societies directory indicates the additional regular sessions available to support students through the year.
