Ms Sarah Forster has been Headteacher at TGGS since September 2021. Prior to joining us from Valentines High School in Ilford, she had been a senior leader in London for 12 years. Ms Forster’s vision is: ‘To equip students for a future in which they have the academic qualifications, character skills and self-esteem to make decisions that lead to long, happy and content lives.’
KS3 Years 7-9
They believe that students should develop a strong, intellectual foundation of knowledge that inspires a passion for learning that will last their whole life. Teachers focus on developing key knowledge and skills - not just those required for their subject, but also the well-being and metacognitive skills that develop students’ character, and the leadership skills to be able to support their local community and contribute towards discussion, debate, and action in national and international concerns. Students study English, Mathematics, Science, French, German, Physical Education, Geography, History, Religion, Philosophy & Ethics, Art, Music, Computing & IT, Food Preparation & Nutrition, Textiles, Drama and PSHE.
KS4 Years 10-11
Through the use of activities to enable recall and retrieval, supporting the development of long-term learning, students are challenged to develop their knowledge and their skills in a wide range of GCSEs. Alongside PSHE, Core Ethics & Values and Core Physical Education, students study 9 GCSEs in Years 10 and 11. All students will study English Language, English Literature, Mathematics, Science, and their option of a language and humanity. They will also have two further choices to make between the following: Art & Design (Fine Art), Art & Design (Textile Design), Business Studies, Computer Science, Drama, Food Preparation & Nutrition, French, Geography, German, History, Music, PE, Religious Studies & Triple Science. There is the additional opportunity to gain an extra GCSE in Geology and some students will also complete Level 2 Further Mathematics.
KS5 Year 12-13
In sixth form, we encourage our students to take on additional leadership responsibilities, to organise clubs for lower school students or to support learning by running the “Hub”. Students have a wide-ranging tutorial programme that develops character and life skills, ensuring they are ready for the challenges of the 21st century. Many choose to develop their critical thinking skills by opting to undertake the Extended Project. Most of our students take three A Level subjects chosen from an extensive range - some individuals take four. Some study an AS level in a creative subject, alongside their three A levels, in Art & Design, Drama & Theatre Studies, or Music.
Dartmoor Society and Ten Tors.
Adventurous activities on Dartmoor take place on alternate weekends between November and April. The walks and camping trips are open to those in Years 10 to 13. Students learn navigational skills, the value of teamwork, and an appreciation of the environment.
Drama and Dance
Both the drama and dance clubs are thriving and the girls get plenty of opportunity to practice at the clubs, to visit other productions and to perform in our own productions. At TGGS the drama students have regular productions for all age groups; recent productions have included 'Olivia', 'Dream On' and 'Ebeneezer'. Students also have the opportunity to earn house points through a House Dance Competition.
Music
There is a strong musical direction to the school. The girls have the opportunity to take part in a range of activities including award winning ensemble groups such as the Choir, Orchestra, String group, Jazz band, Pop band, Close Harmony Choir and the student run Flute group. There are 12 peripatetic staff attached to the school so there is tutoring available for most instruments.
Sport/Physical Activities
They have had considerable success in team and individual sports with students competing at local, national and international level. Games, dance, gymnastics and athletics form a large part of out-of-school activities. Aerobics, cricket, hockey, netball, tennis, badminton, rounders, tag rugby and football are available, and clubs include yoga, handball, table tennis and trampoline. Annually we run an inter-house Gymnastics competition, as well as a very popular Evening of Gymnastics & Dance performance
