They are situated in a quiet road in Wimbledon, with beautiful grounds and large landscaped gardens. We pride ourselves on providing a nurturing and welcoming start to school life, especially during those early years when key social skills and attitudes are acquired and developed for life. They have a long-standing reputation for academic and all-round excellence and every teacher takes great pride in the achievements of each child. The School’s facilities and surroundings give the children a wonderful opportunity to develop their learning further and make it relevant and meaningful to their everyday lives. Lessons and play activities take place throughout the year in our inspiring and spacious garden. Our varied sporting, music and arts programmes give each child the opportunity to experience the enjoyment of participation and competition at any level.
The Early Years (Kindergarten through to Reception)
Kindergarten and Reception start the children on their exciting learning journey with all its adventures, discoveries, challenges, achievements and advantages for life. The Early Years follow the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) Curriculum. The EYFS has seven, interconnected areas of learning and development. Three prime areas are particularly crucial for igniting children’s curiosity and enthusiasm for learning, and for building their capacity to learn, form relationships and thrive.
Key Stage 1 (Years 1 and 2)
The size of The Rowans means that the younger children are already familiar with the teachers and routines in Key Stage 1 by the time they move up to a new key stage. The teachers in both phases are sensitive to the fact that smooth transition from the Early Years to Key Stage 1 is vital to ensure that children feel comfortable and happy in their new curriculum. As such, much groundwork is done during the Summer and Autumn Terms to make sure that each child is settled and ready to achieve their full potential.Outside the areas of English and Mathematics, much of the children’s learning in Science, History, Geography, Design Technology, Art, PSHE and Religious Studies is through half-termly topics. The children receive specialist teaching in Sport, French and Music and enjoy a broad and balanced curriculum which includes themed weeks such as International Week, Design and Technology Week and Arts Week.
Learning Enrichment and Support
Learning Enrichment at The Rowans School exists to help all children achieve their learning potential, whether or not they have a specific learning difficulty or need. They believe that thinking in terms of Learning Enrichment, stresses the notion that support must, and should, be available for all children during their time at The Rowans School. The need for support may be short-term, as a result of absence or a difficulty with a particular subject, or long-term for those with a disability, a specific learning difficulty or simply a less conventional learning style.
Sport
Through our integrated PSHE curriculum, all children are encouraged to develop habits that promote a healthy and active lifestyle. Physical education is a key way in which we do this at The Rowans School. PE and Games is taught by a specialist sports teacher and each week the children have one PE session and at least one outdoor Games afternoon.Indoor PE includes gymnastics, dance and movement.
Drama (LAMDA)
Drama is incorporated into the English curriculum and all children have the opportunity to perform throughout the year, as well as benefiting from workshops and outings to theatres. All children in Year 1 and 2 take part in LAMDA exams during the Autumn Term which develop their confidence in public speaking.Children also have many opportunities to perform to an audience through drama, concerts and plays throughout the year from Kindergarten to Year 2.
Music
Music lessons take place twice weekly and are led by a specialist Music teacher. Most lessons take place in the school hall which enables movement to be incorporated into the curriculum. The children develop their singing and performance skills and learn about simple notation, famous musicians, instruments within an orchestra and basic composing.
Extra-curricular
They offer a wide range of extra-curricular activities both within the school day and after the school day has finished. Staff and external providers arrange clubs including chess, dance, yoga, football to violin, arts and crafts, coding and drama club. We encourage all children from Reception upwards to try a new activity.
Selection Criteria: Selective
Kindergarten places are allocated on a ‘first come, first served basis’ where we look at the number of days between the date of birth and the date of registration with us. We begin the process of offering Kindergarten places approximately 18 months prior to entry. The Rowans is co-educational, so we aim to maintain a good balance of girls and boys where possible. The Rowans is selective from Reception upwards. Selection for Reception entry is based on a child’s potential to thrive in our School environment, which is established through an Observed Play Session, as well as a report from their nursery or current school.
