As an academically selective school, we do live, and indeed love, to learn – and our success in this respect can be seen year on year in the outstanding GCSE and A Level results that our students achieve. Of equal importance to academic study, however, is our commitment to helping our students to learn to live. Being a good citizen in the 21st century is complicated but we focus on developing the personal attitudes, skills and attributes that allow our students to navigate life with confidence and set a course of their own choosing.
Curriculum
The curriculum at North Halifax Grammar School (NHGS) reflects our ethos and aims. It is challenging, broad and balanced and knowledge engaged. At NHGS we believe that E.D. Hirsch is right to argue that knowledge underpins and enables the application of skills; both are entwined. At NHGS we strive for academic excellence and also understand the importance of preparing students for life beyond these walls. Therefore, the curriculum at NHGS is designed to support the Living to Learn, Learning to Live ethos of the school. The curriculum forms a backbone to our ethos statement which in turn develops the ideas behind the motto Living to Learn; Learning to Live and identifies the values, qualities and behaviours that we live by in the school. The letters E, C and M come from two sources, the phrase ‘Every Child Matters’ and from Einstein’s famous quotation E = MC2. These two sources reflect our belief in the importance of respect for every individual and in our tradition as a specialist science college.
Sixth Form
They want to see rounded individuals who have explored their potential. They want to see Sixth Formers gathering experience in different areas in order to develop a broad range of skills and attributes. Universities are also interested in whether a student has the ability to effectively manage a wide range of activities alongside their academic work, thus revealing both their organisational skills and personal qualities. It is precisely for these reasons that we are committed to a full enrichment programme here at North Halifax Grammar School.
Extra Curricular
The curriculum is much more than the subjects on the timetable. The outstanding ethos and culture extend to all areas of life in and out of school. The modern world is full of challenges, some of them unexpected, but we aim to equip all of our students with the skills and attributes they need in order to navigate life with confidence. They teach all of the students to respect themselves, to respect other people and to respect their environment. We develop their moral compasses as well as helping them to move in the right direction in relation to their learning and future employment. We help them to gain understanding of, and confidence in, themselves. When problems arise, we work with our students and thair families to find solutions.
