The Maynard School is an independent and selective day school for girls aged 4–18.

Facilities

Sports Hall, Performing Arts Centre, Drama Studio, an array of music rooms, a bespoke Health & Fitness suite and the netball/hockey/tennis courts, extensive use of state-of-the-art hockey pitches, a choice of swimming pools, the Exeter Arena (the athletics training ground of Olympic runner, Jo Pavey) as well as access to superb watersports facilities on Exeter Quay and numerous performing arts venues scattered across the city.

Things to note

  • Pre-Prep pupils takes part in a number of clubs and activities as part of their day and various outings and visits taking place each term. Pre-Prep girls are also enthusiastic participants in fundraising activities throughout the school year. Everyone enjoys the fun of dressing up, performing, making and decorating, taking part in competitions and sponsored events.
  • The school organises regular outings and visits for Pre-Prep pupils. 
  • All of the Pre-Prep pupils experience half a term of early morning Yoga.
  • Pre-Prep pupils also enjoy weekly swimming lessons at St Luke’s campus (University of Exeter) during the autumn and spring terms, and tennis lessons.
  • On-site Forest School and all Pre-Prep pupils will take part in weekly Forest School sessions all year round.
  • Ballet, Martial Arts and Mini Modern Dance, taught by specialist teachers.
  • Junior School students take part in a number of extra-curricular clubs and activities both at school and after hours.
  • Girls participate in many team sports, including netball, hockey, rounders and basketball, tennis, gymnastics and dance. The girls also have the chance to take part in public speaking, art, cookery, drama or book clubs, amongst many others. Y
  • Music is also at the heart of the school, with most girls studying at least one musical instrument and with plenty of opportunities to perform or just to share their interest. 
  • Junior girls are also enthusiastic participants in fundraising activities throughout the school year.

JOINING THE PRE-PREP (RECEPTION – YEAR 2):

They will consider:

  • Interaction with adults (and peers where possible)
  • Any specific behavioural or individual needs
  • Reading
  • Drawing
  • Practical handling activities

JOINING THE JUNIOR SCHOOL (YEARS 3 – 6):

Entrance assessments for Years 3, 4 and 5 consists of two parts:

  • Reading assessment – Each applicant is given an individual standard reading assessment; an appropriate passage of prose is also used which is followed by a few questions to ensure comprehension.
  • Written assessment – Written papers consist of assessments in English, Mathematics and Non-Verbal Reasoning.

JOINING THE SENIOR SCHOOL:

Entrance Assessment to Years 7 and 8 (U3 and L4) consists of three papers – Reasoning, English and Mathematics.

Candidates for Years 9 and 10 (U4 and L5) sit an additional Science paper.

Reasoning – A standardised set of short problems, assessing logical powers and the ability to understand quickly.

English – This consists of two parts:

  • Comprehension – candidates are given a passage to read and asked to answer questions on it as fully as possible in their own words.
  • Composition – candidates are asked to write a short composition on a topic suited to their age. The compositions are graded according to content and expression (vocabulary, grammar etc).

Mathematics – Mathematics papers are structured so that every candidate has the opportunity to show what she can do at a level appropriate to her age. Admissions Team can be contacted on 01392 355998 or via [email protected]

JOINING THE SIXTH FORM:

If they are then able to offer a place, please note that this is conditional upon your daughter reaching the minimum entry requirements for entry into Sixth Form, namely:

  • at least six grade 7’s
  • a minimum of a grade 7 in both Maths and English GCSE
  • a grade 7 or 8 in the subjects to be taken at A-level

Students will always be considered on their individual merits.

Scholarships

At The Maynard School they offer a range of Scholarships to reflect academic, sporting, musical or creative talent. These are worth 10% of tuition fees. Scholarships are awarded to talented girls who will make an outstanding contribution to the school. Selection for an 11+ or 13+ Academic Scholarship will be purely based on the Entrance Assessment. Further 11+ and 13+ Scholarships are available to external candidates for Sport, Music, Drama and Art. For Sport, Music, Drama and Art, selection will be based on an interview and, where relevant, an audition. Candidates are encouraged to put together a portfolio to illustrate their achievements to date.

16+ Scholarships are available to Internal & External Candidates for the following:
