Exeter Cathedral School is a flourishing day and boarding Prep School for girls and boys. Founded in the 12th century as a choir school, today they are a vibrant independent Prep School which offers an outstanding educational experience to our 275 pupils, and which is proud to educate the Choristers of Exeter Cathedral. Facilities
Nursery (rising-3 to 4 years)
Welcome to Exeter Cathedral School’s Nursery, located in the city centre of Exeter and close to the University, Hospital and Southernhay business district. The purpose-built Nursery building was opened in 2015 and is housed in the Pre-Prep Department in the Cathedral Close. Run by the specialist Head of Nursery and a team of Key Workers, the ECS Nursery offers a first-rate Nursery Education which encourages children to explore, to question, to discover and to build confidence. Children spend 2 years in our Nursery before moving across the playground into our Reception classes.
Pre-Prep (4 – 7 years)
The Pre-Prep is housed in a 14th century former Canonry in the Cathedral Close, nestled safely between the ancient city wall and the Bishop’s garden. It is here where Nursey to Year 2 carry out their daily learning. The dedicated and highly-qualified staff, led by the Head of Pre-Prep, work with the children and families to build independence, enquiry, curiosity and a genuine love of learning.As you step behind the Old city wall into Hall House you will see children happily engaged in challenging and exciting learning activities, children who are learning together in a rich and stimulating environment, children who take care of one another.
Prep (7 – 13 years)
The Prep School is located in the lee of the Cathedral: our main site is on Palace Gate and other specialist departments are clustered together in the North-West corner of the Cathedral Green. In the younger years, the core subjects are taught by dedicated Form Teachers and our creative curriculum is delivered by in-house specialists. The senior pupils receive Common Entrance preparation from experienced and highly-qualified subject specialists. At 13, pupils move on to a range of leading Senior Schools, many with scholarships and awards.

Extra Curricular
They recognise the central importance of the learning opportunities provided by extra-curricular activities, and are pleased to offer a broad and exciting range of clubs and out-of-classroom opportunities to all of the pupils. Music and The Arts play an important part, as does the extensive Sport & Wellbeing programme, and they offer a wide choice of clubs each term. It matters to us that pupils have the chance to explore new territories and develop new skills, and that their talents and interests can be nurtured and enthused by specialist staff.
