The King's School Canterbury

25 The Precincts, Canterbury CT1 2ES, UK
13-18 Years

Description

The King's School is an independent day and boarding school for 13 to 18 year old pupils in Canterbury

Facilities

  • The campus sports hall adjacent to the College is home to the King’s School’s fencing club. Fencing is one of the most popular sports at the College, but students also enjoy many other sports, including some recreational basketball in the evenings after prep.
  • College students also have access to the King’s School’s recreation centre, which is a mere two-minute walk down St Stephen’s road. From swimming to early morning rowing before breakfast, students are able to participate in a huge array of activities in this fabulous facility. The centre is simply called “The Rec” by students and staff.
  • The main pitches, called “Birley’s” by the school community, provide the location for a large number of the weekly games sessions attended by all IC and King’s students.
  • Rowing and sailing are hugely popular among IC students. For both sports, the King’s School Boat Club uses Westbere Lakes at Sturry, about two miles from the IC.
  • Indoor facilities: Sports Hall; Swimming Pool (25m x 12m); Squash Courts; Fencing salle; Fitness Suite; Dance studio
  • Outdoor facilities: Climbing Wall; Tennis/Netball Courts; Artificial Grass Hockey Pitch (Autumn and Lent) converting to Tennis Courts (Summer); and a Shooting Range.

Things to note

  • Over twenty sports are on offer, and a majority of pupils will represent the school in inter-school fixtures.
  • Music at King’s has a distinguished history with a strong reputation for performances of outstanding quality and variety. There are six choirs, three orchestras, many chamber groups, a wind band, big band and a selection of rock and jazz groups.
  • During the scheduled Activities time on Thursday afternoons, and at weekends, there are Photography activities and Art and Design workshops open to all who wish to take advantage of them.
  • Regular visits are paid to London galleries and to other venues. Overseas trips are also arranged, a Biennial trip to Venice with another European city each year in between.
  • The Drama department finds its home in The Malthouse, a converted Victorian building which holds a 334-seat theatre, drama and dance studios and state-of-the-art dressing rooms. During the academic year, two major senior plays and one play for both the Shells and the Removes are produced.
  • All pupils participate in an extensive Activities programme, where they have the opportunity to cultivate and refine talents, pursue current interests, or try something completely new.
