Manor Ln, Sutton SM1 4AS, United Kingdom
11-18 Years

Description

Sutton Grammar School is leading State Secondary school in Sutton. This is a Selective school for kids age 11 to 18 years. Gender - Boys

Sutton Grammar School is a state funded selective school for boys, situated in the centre of Sutton.  They also welcome girls into the Sixth Form. They take 135 boys each year into Year 7 and the vast majority will stay at the school for seven years. Other students join the School in the Sixth Form, each year we plan to take about thirty extra students (boys or girls) into Year 12. The students get excellent results in academic exams but, just as important is that they leave the School confident, articulate young people. They have a balance of qualifications, skills and experiences that prepare them well for entry to leading universities and professional careers. Our school puts the nurture of its students’ welfare on a par with the nurture of their intellect.

Facilities

Curriculum
The curriculum is designed to enable pupils to fully realise their academic potential by becoming successful learners, confident individuals and responsible citizens.  It is also designed to equip pupils with the skills and qualities needed to meet the challenges of life in a fast-changing world. Breadth and balance are important features of our curriculum design.

Key Stage 3
The Key Stage 3 curriculum is broadened and deepened by the inclusion of several days called Challenge Days. Years 7-9 pupils take part in one Challenge Day per year. These Challenge Days provide SGS pupils opportunities to learn and be challenged beyond that provided by normal subject lessons.

GCSE
The essence of the Key Stage 4 curriculum is the balance between a curriculum that offers breadth and that of pupil choice. All pupils follow the statutory Key Stage 4 subjects of Maths, English (Lit. and Language), Science, P.E., Games, R.E. and Citizenship. To ensure breadth, the school insists that all pupils continue to study at least one modern foreign language to GCSE.  We also continue with a Form Tutor period and in Y10, we offer a Young Enterprise course. There are careers lessons in years 10 and 11, and there is access to independent careers advice on an individual basis.  STEM lessons are offered to students in Y10 and Y11 once a fortnight.

A Level
All Sixth Form students study 4 full A level subjects.  We believe that committing to four A-level subjects for two years is the best post-16 preparation for university and working life. A level courses receive an equal number of lessons – 11 lessons in Y12 and 12 lessons in Y13 per fortnight.

Sixth Form
The sixth form marks a new stage in a student’s educational career, one in which greater emphasis is placed on personal resilience and independent organisation.  The academic curriculum in the sixth form is narrower but deeper, as students pursue their subject interests.  The taught lessons are fewer, so the need to organise his own work and extend his own knowledge becomes greater.

Features

Things to note

School Library
All students and staff are automatically members of our Library and able to borrow books from the collections. The Library houses a large range of regularly updated fiction and reading for pleasure is very much encouraged throughout the school. The non-fiction collection is carefully chosen to support the curriculum. There is a careers information collection and lists by subject of suggested wider reading for sixth form students as they prepare for their final exams and onward destination.

Admission Details

Year 7 Admissions
Sutton Grammar School complies with the co-ordinated admissions arrangements administered by the London Borough of Sutton.  135 boys are admitted into Year 7 having gained a place through the entrance tests and placed Sutton Grammar School on their Common Application Form.  Please note that, due to over-subscription, meeting the required standard at our entrance tests does not guarantee the offer of a place at the school.  Please refer to the admissions policy and admissions procedures for our entrance criteria and other relevant information.

Mid-Term Admissions
If you would like to be notified if we do get a vacancy in your son's year group, then you will need to complete a mid-term admission application which you can do by contacting the school admissions department at the London Borough of Sutton. A link to the LBS website can be found on the Other Admissions page. In the event that a vacancy arises children on the waiting list for the relevant year group are invited in for testing.  The child who performs the best, and who must also be of selective ability, is offered the place.

Sixth Form Admissions
They welcome applications from external candidates to our Sixth Form.  Please see our Sixth Form Admissions page and admissions policy for the criteria relating to sixth form entry.  If you have any admissions queries that are not covered on these pages then please contact the Admissions Officer who will be happy to help you.
